Volvo announces new 2.4L 5-cylinder diesel for S80

Over in Europe, Volvo’s top end model - the S80 - will be getting a new engine option this year in the form of a new 2.4L five cylinder diesel. This engine replaces an existing one with the same displacement and configuration. The new engine has an aluminum block and cylinder head and most of the latest in diesel technology. Fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chambers via a 26,000 psi common rail injection system with piezoelectric injectors. Intake air is pressurized by a pair of turbochargers of different sizes in a similar configuration to that used by BMW. The smaller turbo responds quickly at low engine speeds while the larger one takes over as revs build. The combination of a larger EGR cooler to reduce combustion temperatures, and thus NOx production, as well as a particulate filter allow the engine to meet EURO V standards. The D5, as it’s known, produces 205 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. A D5-equipped S80 with a manual transmission is rated at 38 mpg (US) combined, while an automatic transmission drops that to 35.1 mpg (US). That’s an eight percent improvement on the previous diesel while running cleaner.
