MINI News - Mercedes A-Class may live on, as a MINI derivative

Although Automotive News reported that the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class that was due in 2011 had been canceled, it now appears that maybe only the unique A-Class platform is being dropped. German magazine Auto Bild is reporting that Mercedes and BMW may be talking about using the MINI platform as the basis for both companies next-generation small cars.

The current generations of both cars are unique in their respective lineups as front wheel drive models and share few parts with their stablemates. By cooperating, the two German companies could potentially save a lot of costs on their next iteration of these models but they will have to work fast, especially Mercedes which is planning to replace the A-Class in 2011.
