Mazda develops automatic bumper recycling process

Ahhh, the corporate press release. In these missives, there is no detail too small to highlight something a company is doing. Those of us in the green auto media are pretty used to seeing announcements of dubious value come through our in boxes. I don’t remember seeing one purely devoted to bumper recycling before, though. Mazda has filled this gap by developing the “World-First Automated Recycling Technology for End-of-Life Vehicle Bumpers.”

Yes, feed any bumper (from a Mazda vehicle or other) into the crusher and, after a few intermediary steps like removing the metal parts, you’ll get raw plastic resin pellets that can be turned into new bumpers. This process is automatic and greatly simplifies the process, which means that more bumpers can be recycled quicker and more cheaply. Hey, maybe this isn’t such a small deal after all.
