Tough to choose between the two.

im a lancer fan pero i've heard news na medyo underpowered daw ang gsr compared to the hyundai coupe. pero i will have to go to what blackmagic said....reliability, resale value and parts lamang ang lancer. aside from the fact na mas masarap ayusin (papormahin) ang lancer.

hyundai coupe engine = galant gti's 4g63 dohc, slightly detuned to meet tougher emissions regulations today.
hyundai coupe platform = elantra = lancer 93-96

4G63 DOHC > 4G92 SOHC .: hyundai coupe > lancer gsr (at least enginewise)

to prove this point, here's a sample list for a company that can import hyundai engines and transmissions:

1991-1992 ELANTRA (DOHC) 4G61 1.6
1991-1992 ELANTRA (DOHC) 4G62 1.8
1991-1992 SONATA (DOHC) 4G61 1.6
1987-1992 SONATA (DOHC) 4G63 2.0
1989-1991 SONATA 6G72 3.0

hindi 4g63 and engine code ng coupe nor the elantra. though its dohc, magkaiba ang engine head and block design ng hyundai engines used for the '95 up coupe and elantra. their lighter than the 4g63. magkaiba rin ang platform ng elantra with the coupe with the coupe having a different suspension geometry (parang porsche daw) than the elantra. It also has a wider track.

re engine:

you mean the tiburon G4GC1? i thought the older coupe models used an engine very similar to the 4G63. daimler-chrysler also initiated a program that will see hyundai and mitsubishi sharing engine and chassis technology.

re platform:

yes the coupe/tiburon platform is different but it's still the elantra base. think of widening a track in terms of evo5 vs evo4. look for the tuscani in the following link.

Hyundai Coupe!

with its 2.0 liter engine and italian styling, it can win over the gsr if both started with similar budgets to modify both cars.

ang lagay lang eh medyo mahal na yung tiburon. over 1M... for that price, you could get a 2nd hand evo5 already.

pero maganda coupe/tiburon. nice, revvy engine and good balance.
