Default Corona MT vs Galant AT

My friend (Corona MT) and I (Galant AT) did a "friendly" race yesterday at Libis and needless to say I got my ass kicked if not for my friend's poor driving skills that almost ended him in the backside of a jeepney.

QUESTION:

Pwede bang i-accelerate ang AT by using it like an MT when racing another MT car? I mean pwede bang L muna then 2 then D (OD ON) then D (OD OFF) as you accelerate?

yup... you can accelerate thru the A/T's gears like a M/T... in fact I do it myself.

but the sequence would be: (and shifting at the redline)
L
2
D (od/off)
D (od/on) - but I doubt if you'll be fast enough to use this during the 1/4 mile.

take off from a standing start would still be slow but once you are rolling, acceleration would be faster than just leaving the shifter in "D".

Pwede iyan. Brake-torque mo din (rev while holding down the brakes) para mas malakas ang launch.

Default AT shifting like MT?

pwede shift like MT but it wont make you much faster. the big disadvantage of an AT is basically the way the torque converter works... it just saps more power from your engine than a manual. on average the AT will have 15-20% less hp at the wheels than an MT, given both models have the same engine.

In a honda scenario: an AT honda with the SiR engine will be about as fast as an MT VTi, maybe even slower.

I've done the brake-torque launch and it doesn't improve the launch in my case. Maybe if the car was a rear wheel drive.

it would be a bit faster as compared to leaving the shifter in "D" because you can maxmize the engine revs up to redline. Usually the A/T tranny would shift before reaching redline.

we had the same scenario, did the same "friendly" race along libis before, i was driving a Galant AT and my friend was driving a Corona MT... I made this sequence: L, 2, D (od/ off), D (od/ on) --- i was defeated... then we changed cars, i drove his Corona and he borrowed my Galant--- and i was able to beat him... therefore, given an apple to apple engines, MT has a better acceleration than an AT as what splerdu mentioned above...

yeah, this didn't work also for me... the acceleration is still not that speedy...

when racing A/T vs M/T cars of the same engine type... it would be "fair" to do a rolling start.

Ghosthunter dba Altis din ang gamit mong matic?

Try this one... instead of starting at L, try it at 2 since 2 means that tranny will start in its 1st gear equivalent in a M/T but will automatically shift to 2nd gear...

My brother and i tried it many times... we drag his scooter and and an altis (kakaiba - altis pumapatol sa scooter) makulit lng kc lagi kaya pinatulan ko... i tried many combinations, L to 2 to D, L to 2 to D plus ECT on, 2 to D, 2 to D plus ECT on, D and D with ECT on, etc...

Best that i got is 2 to D with off ECT and OD off...

L has a very bad gear ratio for drag i think for the altis... it reaches redline very fast which only makes noise...

Starting from 2 will compensate for the L problem because it automatically shift at the right moment from L to 2...

But i was surprised when i started from D... i was out-accelerated by a scooter... i overtook him at a speed of 70kph... we have already a long way with that speed

The driver of the scooter weigh about 200 at most while the altis has a total passenger weight of 350lbs at most...

This was done for the sole purpose of testing and a little bit of fun... i know it was dangerous cause we only did it inside a village but int was vacation and we were really bored that day...

My opinion was based on this experience and if there are questions and reactions... they are all welcome

As long as you don't press the button on the shifter lock, its pretty safe. The shifter lock will prevent accidents like shifting from D directly into R while traveling at high speed.

yup... but its the AE111 altis, the one with the 4AFE engine not the VVTi version.

I've done a lot of experiments with shifting styles. I've experienced doing L to 2 to D (overdrive off) gave better times in 0 to 60mph acceleration(via G-Tech Pro meter). If I leave the A/T tranny to shift by itself, it would shift at around 5500rpm. My redline is at 6300rpm (based on the tach) while the fuel cut off is between 6500 - 6600rpm.

unfortunately my car has no switch to turn off the ECT... just the OD. I think we drive different models of the Corolla.

well, having an A/T is already pretty bad for drag. My engine shifts too early in the RPM range if I left it in D or 2 to upshift from L to 2. Keeping my shifter in L until I reach redline, I could maximize the engine's maximum potential before shifting to the next gear.

BTW... dba an AE111 altis has a 7A-FE engine rather than a 4A-FE? tsakalam mo pla kung anong AE??? ang altis 2003?

Alam ko hindi na AE ang code ng bagong Altis eh. I'll try to look for the exact code.
