TOYOTA Motor Philippines (TMPC) is targeting an 8-percent sales increase this year on expectations that the domestic market will expand from 2006.
The company also expects that a
new variant of its bestselling Vios sedan would be the driving force behind its sales target.
Toyota will be churning out the Vios in the country beginning this year. The new variant would be assembled in its Sta. Rosa, Laguna plant TMPC vice president for sales Jing Atienza said over the weekend.
The company is currently importing the Vios from Thailand, but preference by Filipinos for the sedan because of its affordability has prompted Toyota officials to consider manufacturing the model here.
The Vios 1300-cc model sells for P553,000 and the 1500-cc for P722,000.
Toyota expects to breach the 38,000-sales mark in 2006, which means its 8-percent target would result in sales of at least 41,000 units this year.
The domestic auto industry is likely to reach totals sales of 99,000 this year. Official 2006 sales figures will be released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers in the Philippines Inc. next week.
Toyota, which has a domestic market share of over 35 percent, projects 2007 industry sales to breach the 100,000, ending the year with at least 103,000 vehicles sold. The 100,000 mark was last breached in 1996.
From January to November 2006, industry sales rose slightly by 1.6 percent to 89,391 from 87,996 in the same period in 2005.
