Default Toyota Hi-Ace Grandia Vs. Hyundai Starex Jumbo

Hello Fellow tsikoteers,
I am currently deciding what to buy, and has decided to limit my choice between A grandia or a starex jumbo. I have remove the Nissan Urvan Estate from my choice because it has an old engine design and low torque and HP. I want a big van to carry 2 families during our out of town trips and ample cargo space. I would appreciate any feedback from you. Thank you. Both takes about 2 months leadtime. The Grandia because there is a waiting list and the Starex Jumbo because it is on by order basis.

Starex. How big are the 2 families combined anyway?

OT -> in my case if 2 familis, i'll get those micro bus from japan(rosa/coaster, hehehe) sa may near banawe along delmonte ave, meron dun mga 1.2M lang, pero sure comportable kayo, at malaki lang ng onti sa hiace grandia(pero mataas ang roof line at siyempre power doors,tv nalang kulang)

starex seats only 8-9, (jumbo->11-15)

hiace commuter(smaller at makitid) sits 15(uncomfortably) grandia GL seats only 10-11.. and super grandia seats even lesser(kasi cap'n seats na to for the 2 row)

I go for starex Jumbo, because it is more comfortable and safety features and reasonable price i think compare to Grandia. Kaya lang sayang kung may A/T mas maganda sana, but if Grandia has an A/T grandia would be better than Starex Jumbo, but since both only M/T is available i go for starex na lang. To add nga pla starex Jumbo is Climate control na ung aircon nya tpos nka LSD , i dont know kung sa Grandia same din.

I think this should be transferred to the Car Comparo board.

Anyhow, how many people comprise "two families"? If it's about 8 all in all, get the Jumbo. This way, you can fold the last row for your cargo space, and still be able to sit 8-9 people comfortably. The Grandia's last row can not be folded down, so this limits your cargo capacity, unless you have that last row removed or converted to a foldable type. When you do this, I'd go with the Grandia cargo-wise. Seating capacity will be just the same as the Jumbo. And then comes the engine. The CRDi will wallop the D-4D performance-wise, plus there's an issue about the D-4D choking. The CRDi is quite thirsty tho.

If it's more than 8, then alwayz_yummy's suggestion for a Rosa might be in order

have you been able to drive the D-4D on those types of inclines? dapat talaga kasama sa test drive ang mga ganyang situation. di puro flat straightaway lang.

nope, i assume, na yung a/t variant ng d4d 2.5 ay mahihirapan sa ganyang inclines(just like sa 2.4L(2L)) na unang labas na late model hi-ace-->prone sa overheat climbing kennon rd.)

innova d4d a/t palang fares/accelarates just like my JDM 4wd AT 2c-te liteace..just right lang ika nga, parang sagad na nga ang d4d m/t sa commuter version, lalo na sa bigger grandia....i just wonder nalang sa performance ng a/t d4d sa super grandia.(@1.7-1.8M pa! w/ unguaranteed min waiting time of 3 months)...

Ah I see. I actually don't doubt the specs on paper. 145ps(CRDi) vs 102ps(D-4D) is indeed quite substantial. I've also felt the 145 horses in action. It's addictive I would, however, just like to give the D-4D the benefit of the doubt in terms of gearing and being able to handle the weight of the body it's supposed to haul. It's not going to be as fast or quick as the CRDi, but then is it just/barely potent enough? Thanks to your observation, mukhang mabibitin ka nga with the 2.5L D-4D. My Prado's 1KZ-TE engine naman, for instance, is 130 hp only. For something that big, on paper it seems quite underpowered, but then, surprisingly in real life, it does carry its weight.

2.4L in the old hiace is slug, ung 5L(un ang 3.0 na nilabas, not 1kz, locally) is good na...then tinipid ulit to 2.4L

ang mga JDM hiaces has 1kz-TE na! masyadong confident kasi ang toyota dito, kasi kahit kahit under-powered sasakyan nila, overpriced at over hyped parin, next to honda....

basta ako jdm 4m40 na 4wd spacegear LWB(exceed m/t or royal exceed a/t) ang most prefer ko...next is ung SWB na spacegear

nga pala, if 2-traditional filipino families -> a rosa/coaster still a best buy. mas mura kaysa sa 2 van, lalo na pag highways, comportable pa.

traditional filipino family-->nanay,tatay, mga kapatid, lolo, lola, at mga pinsan, tyu/tyahins.....not including house helps na members na din ng family

Yep

If indeed 2 traditional filipino families ang isasakay, di na kakayanin ng Jumbo or Grandia, at mahihirapan din ang Commuter (not that i'd be recommending it in any case tho). The only thing I don't like about a coaster is its size. It's no longer in the van category, so it's much bigger than an E-150 and Grandia, so it's not as easy to take around, as perhaps 2 vans. Also, correct me if i'm wrong, but will a private coaster/mini-bus be allowed to the same places, take the same routes as a private van? Considering of course that the coaster will still fit the place. Yun nga lang, if 2 traditional filipino families ang kelangan hakutin in 1 vehicle, no choice nga, need a big rig, or 2 smaller vans.

We're in the same boat. My family also needs a big van. Kaso, we want one with A/T kaya nahihirapan kaming pumili. Yung Hiace Super Grandia sana kaya lang mahal. Sayang, wala na yung Starex Jumbo na A/T, that would have been more within the budget.

Aside from the lack of an A/T variant, our other gripes about the Urvan Estate is the lack of safety features and the manual side mirrors.

Dunno about the pre-Super Grandia 90s Hiace.
