Smile now what...? need your advices, please.[just bought Civic]

good pm tsikoteers! last time i posted around april or may that im planning to buy a second hand car, with your help and support i've learned a lot about cars. unfortunately the car that i have now is far from what i expect (wala kasi ito sa nainquire ko ng maiigi dati). at daming salaamat sa lahat ng tsikoteers n handang tumulong sa lahat ng tao. but fortunately i have my first car that i think is better, i acquire a 1997 honda civic vtec with automatic transmission eto n po ata ung vti bukas ko po makukuha ung car.

Eto po ung problem ko, i dont have any knowledge about maintenance of honda civic, mga tips, pros and cons will help me a lot. What are the items that i should consider when riding this car or ano ano kaya ang magandang approach for preventive maintenance? bukod po sa kasa may kilala po ba kayong expert sa honda civic? meron po b kayong alam na forum para sa mga honda civic users? para atleast we could share the same problem, kasi parang ang alam ko lang n club is nissanbayan, mymitsu and wala n po, pero alam ko madami un eh. may alam po ba kayo kung ano fuel consumption ng honda civic vtec particularly ung matic.

Please tsikoteers give me advice on my new car....

thank you very much and god bless!

The Civic is a typical-average car. It does not need a specialist (which is good). Any competent shop can work on it.

Maintenance items and their intervals are detailed in the manual. Just follow that for now.

You can buy a Honda Civic Service Manual from Fully Booked Greenhills Promenade if you are interested in doing work yourself or at least knowing what your mechanic is talking about.

by the way ang problem ko pa nga pala dito sa car n ito are:

1. sa upper ryt rear fender (malapit po sa ibabaw ng ilaw sa likod)is nagbubble ung pintura, how much po kaya ito? maliit lang naman po around 6 square inches lang po. kaso baka lumala at kumalat kung kalawang nga po ito.

2. ung power antenna nya is hindi n po gumagana magkano po kaya ito or meron avilable nito n hindi sa honda mismo and may idea po ba kayo kung magkano?

pero it is in good shape and perfect running condition such as engine, A/C unit, stereo and all the accesories inside.

please help me thanks.

first of all, congrats on your purchase!

second, Honda Civics are bulletproof cars. just follow the prescribed maintenance schedules, keep the paint clean and waxed, and with a little luck and common sense you'll be fine throughout the life of the vehicle.

if i had to name one weakness of Civics, i'd have to say it's the timing belt. make sure that's replaced according to the maintenance schedule or you run the risk of grenading your engine.

there is an official Honda Club floating around (HCPI yata)...some Tsikot members are also members i believe.

Alex Car Restoration (one of the best and most expensive here in Metro Manila) charges Php4k/panel. If it involves only one fender, that will be charged as one panel.

Sa car show, Php600.00 lang ang benta ng Autosport sa power antenna nila (they have a store in Megamall where they sell at regular prices kapag hindi show season).

Power antenna repairs in Banawe starts at Php400.00 going up. Meron din silang bago dun if you like.

I own exactly the same car (except that it's 1996 :grin) and I will point out the good and bad stuff I noticed.

Good:
- Headlight beam and bulb quality
- Bulletproof engine
- Good passenger space for an economy car
- Nice ventilation
- Good stock sound system
- Suspension a very good compromise of ride and handling

Bad
- Suspension not as sturdy as Toyotas, also harder and more expensive to service
- Power antenna goes and stays up, or doesn't go up at all (depending on what kind of bad luck you get)
- Right headlight occasional moist (problem of several 96-98 Civics)
- Power locks get busted easily
- No drink holders and split/fold rear seats

another thing mga sir and mam, nagpunta po ako kania sa goodyear servitek nagpapalit ng tires, tpos pinacheck ko n po ung whole car, gusto ko sana magpalit ng steering fluid, brake fluid and atf fluid. 1st question advisable po ba itong ipapagawa ko? sabi kasi sa drain and bleed off ng brake fluid karamihan daw eh pagnagpaflush eh nasisira ung brake master (quoted n specially ung civic n ganyang model) after 1 week, same thing with steering fluid. pero nun sa atf na nawalan n ko gana kasi ganon din daw? please guide me po. thank you.

Fluid changes are ALWAYS recommended, kahit araw-arawin mo pa (though doesn't make sense ehhhehehe)

Fluids should be changed at the specified intervals in the owner's manual (or even more often).

If the shop you went to cannot handle the job, there are many others that can. For ATF, always stick to OEM (original). Autotechnika in Fairview has the ATF changing machine and you can bring your own (original) ATF.

Sa gas station they just drop the ATF oil pan and fill in new fluid. That equates to about 3 liters in a Starex. I'm planning to have the oil pan and ATF filter cleaned as well.

Wala siyang clutch fluid.

Default Update lang po.

medyo napanatag ung loob ko kasi may nabasa ako sa forum dito din eh, about sa transmission na pag ung amoy ng atf eh medyo sunog, sira n daw un, pero sa akin sweet and sour pa rin amoy and malinis pa po, pero due for replacement na po ito kaya papapalitan ko n lang, may idea po ba kayo kung ano indication kung gumagana na ung vtec nya? kasi may nabasa ako (di ko matandaan kung saan forum ko nakita pero mga 1/2 yr n nkalipas) na madaming honda civic vti n po na parang sira n ung relay(or something that trigger the vtec) kay ganun, or meron po bang ganun ung 1997 honda vti? please advice me po. thanks

I have a 96 civic vti matic and manual, yung matic binenta ko na. medyo matakaw sa gas at 6-7km/liter sa city driving. I suggest wag mo na pagawa power antenna, IMO its only there for aesthetic purposes. Use only honda original atf for the transmission fluid (mahal masyado) around 550/liter sa casa.watch out for rear bushings, madali bumigay.
On the bright side it has a smooth engine which you can rev hard till redline hehehe.Plus it probably has one of the best suspensions among compact cars.
