I'm planning to buy a used car and may nag-offer sa akin kakilala ng kakilala ko Nissan Sentra Ex Saloon Series 3 1997, 1.4 engine. Actually nde ko pa nakita and nde ako familiar sa mga sentras. Tanong ko lang:

1. Gas mileage - economical na ba 'to?
2. Ano mga stock ng ex saloon (all-power na ba?)
3. Ano difference sa Super Saloon with Ex Saloon
4. Ano common sakit ng sentra esp. this one
5. Dami na ba surplus ng mga parts nito

my first car was a 1997 Sentra Ex Saloon

1. 9-10km/l... on a really light footed driver, it can get 11km/l.
2. for 1997 series 3 model Ex Saloon (stock), you get power steering, stock clarion stereo with 4 speakers, tilting steering wheel, defogger, 185/65R14 with 6 spoke alloys, 97 models has body colored bumpers, grille and side mirrors.
3. 1st is the engine, Ex Saloon has 1.4L DOHC 16valve EFi engine with 90hp. SS has the GA16DE 1.6L DOHC 16valve EFi with 110hp. it has all the features of the Ex Saloon plus tachometer, power windows, locks, mirrors with power folding feature, power antenna, trunk mounted 3rd brake light, rear headrest, 60/40 split bench, rear garnish, sporty 5 spoke alloys...97 models has a driver's airbag.
4. we had a problem on the water pump, broke once and we overheated. if it was its achilles heels, proper maintenance should prevent it.

okay pa ba ang kaha? may kinakalawang? bangga, gasgas?
hindi ba amoy sigarilyo/pagkain/palenge/baboy/isda sa loob ng kotse?
iyun tunong ng makina okay pa ba?
may kumakalampag pag tumatakbo? (underchassis)
malinis ba ang makina, langis, tubig, interior ng sasakyan, trunk, ilalim ng kotse?

iyan ang titignan mo muna initially bago bumili ng sasakyan...

Watch out lang for worn bushings. This is a problem on softly sprung Sentras, but on their lower models, the stiffer tuning often prevents this.

The water pump isn't a common problem... at least, we never had that problem, but it always pays to check the cooling system of any secondhand very very carefully.

Common problems for secondhand EFI Sentras tend to be dirty MAF sensors, idle control valves (you'll notice this on the test drive anyway) and possible aircon problems. Sentra aircon compressors are relatively expensive (that's why they're so cold), but you can always have them converted, if you wish. If you're lucky, though, you'll be getting a Sanden instead of the complicated Calsonic.
