Someone is offering me an LC 70 series 3 door for 215k, it has this roof that is kinda like fiberglass or something. 1994 model, recaro seats, ARB Front Bumper, rancho shocks and a 3 inch lift, it sports 30" plus mud tires but the problem is the engine. The first time I saw it, I was disappointed, a non-turbo toyota 2L, obviously a weakling also the dashboard is one fine mess, there are aircon tubes protruding, a couple of wires dangling and a gaping hole in the middle. My question is: what is the best engine that I could get in this thing in case I buy it and where can I find a dash for this LC? Some folks suggested the toyota 3B or if I would be lucky, the KZ1. Any idea on how much these engines cost in the surplus arena? The dashboard and the engine really made me think twice on buying this thing.A test drive will be at the offing tomorrow so we could test the 4wd system. What made me take a 2nd look is that it really looks very cool! The bodywork is ok and the stance is really screaming testosterone! I just love the way it looks...but then a reality check tells me that performance first before looks...I hope you could help me out on this. Thanks!
We got two units LC78 about 2-years ago. both had 2LTe engines (turbocharged-electronic). One quickly developed engine trouble and we could not get it to work right. Very hard to work on the electronics - it controls the turbo and injection pump. We finally replaced the engine with a 5L engine, 3.0 liter, non-turbo, non-electronic. Everything has worked fine ever since.
The second unit with automatic transmission has worked fine for over 2-years often running more than 5,000km per month. We are just waiting for the engine to quit before we put in a 5L engine.
Yup, pinalitan nga yung engine. as for the 1kz, mahal din pala, pero I guess it would be really nice to have it in there. yung 5L, saang sasakyan yan na naka kabit?Toyota rin ba? Magkano yung surplus? Try ko hanapin yung number nung si Mr. Libongcugon.
Thanks folks!
The 5L, i believe, came from a japanese hiace. It is a slightly larger verison of the 2L and 3L. The 3L was the standard engine of the Hilux4x4. What is nice about the 5L is that it was a drop-in replacement for the 2Lte engine. Almost everything is compatible including the bell housing so we used the original transmission. Medyo mas mahal lang kaysa 3L. We paid about P100,000 for the engine a year ago but I don't exactly know where we bought it. And medyo scarce ang supply. But spare parts are plentiful since compatible siya sa 2L/3L.
Update! I bought the LC 70 for 210 and I have been running the cruiser for almost a week now and no major problems so far, except for the darn leaks. I'm trying to look forward for an engine swap in the future. Kindly help me out decide folks! In line with that, what would be the most recommended engine that I put in this rig. Here are some conditions that have to be met:
1. Parts are plentiful (but I doubt if cheap) - the most important condition
2. Powerful engine
3. A Diesel
4. No major wiring/adapting to happen
5. Cheap or let's say practical
The contenders:
1. 2B 3168 4 ID HP- 93@3600?
2. 3B 3431 4 ID HP -90@3500
3. 13B-T 3431 4 TDD HP - 120@3400 210@2000
4. 1KZ-T 2982 4 TID HP - 125@3600
5. 1KZ-TE 2982 4 EID HP - 130@3600
6. 2L 2446 4 ID HP - 72@4000
7. 2L-T 2446 4 TID HP - 86@4000
8. 2L-TII 2446 4 TID 90@4000
My initial choice is the 13BT...any comments? Thanks folks!
Tama! guzzler ang 13BT. Yan ung makina ng wrangler ko dati (10 years ago)

Someone is offering me an LC 70 series 3 door for 215k,
Sir saan mo nabili yan?. kasi balak ko rin bumili ng ganyang model
pang akyat sa bundok, kasi may farm ako dyan sa gensan, malandag
pinyahan ng dole grabeng rough road pag akyat doon eh bagay yan dahil
pang 4x4 talaga.
Hi Greaseman!
I bought it here in Baguio. The owner had a lot of cars that's why he had to sell his LC70. I got it for 210k minus the cost of the paperwork. There's a lot of work to be done to this machine, in the looks department and the set up, no problem. It's more of the internals like the engine that needs a lot of work. That's why I try to solicit advice from our friends here on what engine to put in, in case I decide to change powerplants.
Gang,
Here are some pics of my LC70 "bundera". It's got dunlop grandtrek MT2's.As you would see the dash has a lot of work to be done! See that gaping hole in the middle? There use to be a stereo there, the former owner said someone stole it. I am planning to take out the dash and have the wiring checked and also to look for that darn leak. It's a work in progress...I hope no nasty surprises as I get to know this machine!
