Brand New Hyundai Getz or 2nd Hand Corolla 98 XE???

Hi! im new here in Tsikot. Can you guy please help me decide which car to buy? Im planning to buy my first car but im having a hard time in choosing between a brand new Hyundai Getz 1.3 and a 2nd hand Toyota Corolla 98 XE. I was already decided (in a way) to buy a brand new Getz (P 439K) kaso medyo tight sa budget ko, as in sakto lang halos talaga. in fact, 40-50% lang kaya ko i-down and 4 yrs to pay pa (around P7K/month). My second choice is the a 2nd hand Corolla 98 XE. My bro saw an add and he was able to talk to the owner of the car but we havent seen/visited the car yet (maybe within this week, we will visit/see the car). She is offering her 98 XE for P230K. Aside from it is lady-driven, it has Dual airbags, 43T Kms. (milage), nice finish (light blue color), well maintained at wala daw sira.

Which is the better buy??? Considering the:

1. Quality/Resale value (after 5 yrs)
2. Availability/Cost of Spare Parts
3. Maintenance
4. Fuel Consumption (baka kasi umabot ng P50/liter ang gas in the near future)

I'd get a 2nd hand car if I we're you. Be it a Lancer, Civic, or Corolla.

The Getz ain't bad but Corollas are certainly proven. For the price of a new Hyundai, I'd pick a used 1.6 Toyota. But as for you, here are some things you need to consider.

Getz
- long-term reliability still unknown but projected not to be too disappointing
- fuel economy adequate but may not be as good as equivalent Japanese cars

XE
- still carbureted but efficient
- some repair worries after purchase but should only cost more time than money

I'd rather get a brand new vehicle than a 6 year old car.

You'll never really know the maintenance history of the pre-owned car.

Check out the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], for first hand owner experiences with the said car. It seems that they are pretty much satisfied with it. Fuel economy based on their posts is around 13km/L.

hmmm.based on your choices, i would go for the corolla..even though its older, the resale i think is better than the Getz, even after 5 years. baka after 5 years, baka pareho na lang presyo nyan.

space wise, corolla too, hands-down.
maintenance and reliability, toyotas are known for that.
pero dapat, maganda maintenance history nung 2nd hand na car mo.

That's a Getz after a head-on collission with a Pajero. It is not mine - got it from a poster in the Getz thread.

From the looks of it, the engine slid underneath rather than directly towards the driver.

back to the topic, ok nga yung 98 na corolla. although 7 yrs old na nga yun, the mileage, at arnd 6T+ kms per yr, is quite small. kaya ok yan kung di talaga tampered hehe. but don't be too confident about "lady-driven" cars. in my case, my wife never seems to see the potholes until she hits them and can seldom gauge the corners when going thru tight spaces. not to mention, the gutter when parallel parking. hehehe. all said, if you can get a brand new, do so. the maintenance cost of a second hand will definitely be a headache. pero kung di talaga kaya ang brand new, wag mo nang pilitin. check out other 2nd hand brands. baka may mas maganda ka pang makuha. and when buying a 2nd hand, don't think much of the resale value. wala ka na masyadong malulugi nyan kasi nasagot na ng 1st owner ang depreciation. good luck!

The Getz has more interior space then a AE111 Corolla IMO...

On fuel economy, the Getz will also have the advantage due to a newer engine design, EFI, and maybe a lighter body. The Corolla 1.3L is just "average" for a 1.3 and sometimes it does guzzle if the carb/engine is not tuned properly and when you drive on the highways with a good load due to the added weight.

If i we're in your position though, i'm more to lean on the Corolla more due to the buying power circumstances (240K for a '98 XE is quite good... i'd really avoid taking loans to buy stuff) and I know i can already repair the common problems on that car given a knowledgeable mechanic and an extra 50K in cash for repairs.

Solely due to budget reasons I would get the corolla. Dati nung bumili rin ako ng first car ko I had so many decisions to make, but it is very important to not spend over what you can afford. Isipin mo na lang na kung Getz kukuhanin mo 4 years ka magbabayad para dun. That is a very long time.

parang medyo mahal ang XE for 240K..... tawad ka pa...or hanap ka pa ng ibang option...

I agree an maganda talaga ang brand new, but if uutangin mo rin lang mostly ang ibabayad dyan eh mas practical siguro ang 2nd hand na wala kang utang pagkatapos...besides 4 yrs is a long time to pay...by that time eh sigurado ako na me masisira na dyan sa getz.....unproven reliability pa rin yan (no offense meant to hyundai getz owner here, just stating my own opinion, nothing against hyundai or kia's) unlike honda's and toyota's..na if you bought brand new, I think in 4 yrs time eh mostly regular maintenance lang ang gagastusin mo....unless nakakuha ka ng lemon....

magkano ba talaga ang budget 230K ba? medyo luma na ang 98 bro.
dapat 2000 up ang hanapin mo.

01 Altis...medyo pricey pa ito...well that's resale value to you my friend...
