Default Brand New Kia Picanto M/T vs. 1998 Opel Vectra Irmscher Edition A/T

Which do you think is a better deal? The Picanto has an SRP or Php 415k at the moment. The Vectra is being sold at Php 248k.

The Vectra does require some cosmetic work and detailing though I'm not sure on the mechanicals (test drive still pending). Will it cost as much as the price difference with the Picanto to fix up? Planning to have Zee do the suspension stuff, get other parts from Thunder, and possibly have other mechanical works done by Class-A Mastercraft (shop that does work on my rig).

Advisable ba? Other option would be 2000 model year-up Astras for around Php 350K.

Looking for 1997 or newer vehicles with a budget of around Php 400k. Suggestions welcome. Sorry, no garden-variety Japanese cars (Civics, Corollas, Sentras, etc.).

Thanks!

There are various horror stories people say about the vectra... (needed to say that just to get it out of the way)

That said... I'm very very happy with my 1999 Vectra CDX station wagon... Hasn't given me any major trouble at all... Casa screwed up once but now work is done by a private mechanic... No overheating... Drives at 150 kph up continuously when I want to... My girlfriend (and soon to be wife) can keep up with me (sort of) even when I'm on my bike... Very quiet inside... Comfy...

I too was considering a Kia Picanto as a new car (better fuel efficiency)... Looked at it... Test drove it... Back-to-back driving with my Opel, it wasn't even close... In the end, I just got myself a new bike... Much happier now...

I would get a Vectra or Astra over the Picanto definitely.

On service, yes masakit sa ulo yung Opel as compared to Japs and MB/BMW due to relatively lesser service backing but if you know where to buy the parts and go for servicing then OK lang... not cheap but it's more tolerable as long as you can afford it (if you know what i mean ). Plus side for those cars is of course the German solidity... it's very stable on the highway and the door shut with authority.

The Vectra wins in space and power given the larger body and engine but i'd lean over an Astra as most mechanics i've spoken to say it's had lesser problems then the Vectra and Omega plus it's more popular then the two so there should theoretically be more parts available. We we're so tempted to buy an Astra station wagon before being sold to us at a good price but decided to buy a used Sentra instead (yung parang kay Ki).

Another thing... make sure it runs on 95 octane fuel... theres engine knock and mas mahina hatak pag naka 93 octane lang siya. Check also the underchassis and if the timing belts have been changed in the 30,000km interval since thats what the CASA seems to implementing (i don't know why though).

The question is bakit ganoong kababa ang selling price ng Opel? Hmmmm. Makes me wonder.... sakit sa ulo ng previous owner? ....ganoon talaga ang presyo? ....walang bumibili?

Yan talaga market value ng Opel. Vectra wagons go for about Php 330K.

I'm still looking into other options like early Jimnys and Exaltas, though.

Even if I don't like most Opels, I don't think the Picanto is even near its territory... I'd take the Opel any day (assuming ayos syempre hehe).
