Comments from actual owners of the Altima please? Thinking of getting either one. Our family have had 3 of this galant types before (89 AT/MT and 92 GTi) so I more or less know how it is... But still what are your long term (post 80,000KM maintenance/probs) issues?
Galant (MPI minimum - kung GTi edi mas ok pero malabo)
Altima (1.8 or 2.0)

2.0 - one helluva fast car, was in high school when my dad had it as a daily drive. favorite niyang hirit noon: "uuy, 180 na pala takbo natin" tapos ngingisi lang bago bumagal ng onte. it was really hard to notice na mabilis na ang takbo cause maganda ang suspension.
drawbacks: yun din, suspension. medyo maagang bumigay yung ball joint niya, if i remember correctly they were replaced a little before 50K km.
others: only a mother could love its looks, well at least di ka mahuhuli pag pumasok ka sa one way street kasi magkamukha yung harap tsaka likod. pinaka bad trip yung wood trim - hindi na nga mukhang wood tapos nakalagay pa "simulation wood"
The Galant will win the porma and parts availability side but i'd go with the Altima on the performance side (SR20 power and torque! This thing runs along and even gets ahead of it's similarly engined 2.0 and V6 counterparts)... on Subic, i've seen an a/t Altima give B16 engined Civics the go-around.
With the Altima, observe the following:
- cold start timing chain clatter (common with SR20's unless the owner really changed his oil very often).
- divebombing idle (can be cured though with some working knowledge and sweat).
I love the way it looks actually hehe... weird ako sa kotse eh...

Hehe, good one... Tawag ko nga dito LRT, hehe parehas halos harap at likod. :P
Vinj: will take note
Ano fair price ng 2.0 these days?

Usually nga mga 150-200K depending on mileage and condition na... there are some late release '96 to '97 model ones going for around 220K (naka leather seat ata).
i'd buy the altima din. nissan engines are tough little buggers...neglected my sentra b13, never changed the oil for a year and a half, no maintenance with regard to filters etc, even overheated 3-4 times due to a broken a/c fan (b13s have 2, as with most 90s-current cars - 1 for the rad, 1 for the a/c)...yet the engine continued to run sweetly before i sold it 2 years ago.
last i heard the new owner preferred driving it long distances over his pickups and vans...lameeg daw ng a/c.
nissan reliability - dahil dito i'll take an altima over a galant anytime.
The Altima is quoted to be a speed monster. It's a pleasure to drive fast in a deserted highway before dawn! Perhaps it's the great DOHC engine and the sure-footed suspension. I'm not sure though how this measures up with the also mighty Corona/Exsior in terms of performance. By the way, does this have ABS?
If you plan to get this car, you might want to put a trunk spoiler to distinguish the rear from the front. It's a sad thing Nissan cars are not appealing at all. They have the potential but exterior designs need some soul. Their RWD 2-doors look nice though, but sadly, none of them were sold locally. Nevertheless, the sedans we have here should have an identical sporty bloodline that can please the driver if not bystanders.
On the other hand, Galant is a looker. It only has a SOHC engine so I'm not sure how spirited it performs. Earlier posters here claim that the Altima is more fun at high speed, so I guess you can take their word for it. If you can put a 4G63 in the Galant, then it's a hell of a car also! The 5th-gen GTi itself is also great, if you don't mind its age.
Especially if it was similar to the silver Altima of a little birdie we know of.
The SR20DE is very durable but do expect to take your time in reconditioning one if there are problems (ive seen some pretty wasted ones when we were considering one before). Shopping for parts is just a matter of knowing where in Banawe to look (some of the guys in Nissanbayan can help on this pretty well). When you're checking one out, try to make sure the engine is cold when you start as this is where some of the telltale problems come out (erratic idle, timing chain clatter). If the owner heated it up prior to your checking it, he may possibly be trying to hide those.
Mileage will get you around 8km more or less at the average if you drive with a prudent foot in the city. Some highway drivers from Laguna report 9-10km with theirs also.
