We're interested in a van and right now it's between a starex and a sedona. We're interested in the Sedona but they're only offering a V6 gas guzzler and we've read that the Starex has lots of issues. What are the pros and cons of both vans? Thanks.
1st they are both korean made so don't expect japanese quality sedona has a 2.9 turbo diesel, intercooler variant. Both vehicles are good just depends on your needs the starex rides tall like a van while the sedona is like a station wagon. Both have the same standard seating capacity 9 seater, unless you get the optional 12 seater for the starex (jumbo) or the converted 7 seater for the sedona
anyway, the sedona is closer to the traditional north-american minivan formula. the starex is smaller on the outside but is significantly more capacious inside because of its height.
the sedona would probably drive and ride better, and its design allows better crash safety characteristics. pero mas masikip yan sa loob than the starex, especially at the 3rd row bench.
The Starex is built on a more trucklike scale as it is also used in commercial applications.
Tama si mbt, the Sedona is a more U.S.-minivan type vehicle. It sits low, has a comfortable suspension and is basically leagues more car-like than the Starex. In short, you do not have to climb aboard to get in (as you do in the Starex).
Being a truck-based vehicle does have its advantages. They can carry more payload, can be set up to tow and are generally more robust.
Yes, the Starex II is not very handsome. But I still kinda like it. Especiall the Starex II 4x4 on display along Quezon Avenue.

The sedona with the seat conversion has good leg room in the 3rd row, especially as the 3rd row is adjustable forward or back. I find the Starex more cramped (leg room) than the sedona for the last row, just that the starex has more ceiling clearance due to its design, obviously. Because of the lower ceiling clearance, it is harder to climb in to the back row for the Sedona than the Starex.
The 12 seater is cramped as they have to squeeze in so many rows of seats. My experience is based on the 9 and 12 seater starex, no idea with the new 2004 starex though. Also, I have the 2003 2.9 diesel Sedona with the seat conversion.
For me, i think the Starex is more tried and tested and its Mitsu based platform does add some value... But the Sedona has more power and comfort based on my test drives before.
the starex 3rd row is "roomier" not so much because of the horizontal clearance between the 2nd and 3rd row benches, but rather because the seats are higher up, like dinner-table chairs. mas nakakapagod kasi yung low seats especially if there's not much room to stretch (which incidentally, is how the venture's 3rd row bench is).
The earlier Carnivals used side-facing third row seats (ala AUV). But a conversion package was available and a front facing OEM rear bench would be put in.
I don't think newer Carnival Sedonas use side facing seats anymore. They come equipped with a front facing bench right from the factory.

Otep, I was in a Kia showroom around 2 months ago, and the units displayed were still the side facing 3rd seats.
Mbt, tama nga, you sit higher in the starex than the sedona in the 3rd row. Still, you can stretch out your legs pa rin in the sedona coz the seats are adjustable.
Benchph1, good trivia! So, which is better for a minivan, front or rear wheel drive?
With the engine, as diesels go they are torquey, but the sedona diesel delivers a torque of 315nm/2000rpm while the starex only has 220 over 2200 rpm. Iba talaga ang hatak at hataw ng sedona vs the starex. That's even if the sedona weighs around 1830 kgs (curb weight) vs the starex at 1620 kgs, or a difference of around 200kgs. This is based on the current starex, not the CRDi model.
