Volvo launches flex fuel S80 and C30 in Thailand to go with new E85 stations

Filed under: Ethanol, Flex-Fuel, Volvo, Asia

Here in the US, millions of flex-fuel vehicles were sold before significant numbers of E85 stations began to open. Over in Thailand there were already two E85 stations before the first car was even sold. Volvo has launched two E85 capable flex-fuel models in the south-east Asian country. The S80 sedan is assembled locally from a knock down kit while the C30 is imported. The S80 is powered by a 2.5L five cylinder turbo while the C30 gets a 1.8L four cylinder. Like Swedish compatriots Saab, Volvo has promoted flex-fuel vehicles in Europe but has not yet offered them in the US market. Bangkok is expected to have 15 E85 stations by sometime in 2009. It’s not known where the E85 in Thailand is coming from, but odds are it’s not corn ethanol from the US.

“Best in class consumption.” “Lowest CO2 emission levels.” These are some of the nice things that Volvo has decided to say about its new Volvo DRIVe range, which we first saw at the Paris Motor Show. The DRIVe cars - the C30, S40 and V50 1.6D - have entered production last week. These clean diesel models get outstanding fuel economy: 4.4 liters/100 km (53 mpg U.S.) for the C30 and 4.5 liters/100 km (52 mpg U.S.) for the S40 and V50. CO2 emissions are low as well (115 and 118 g/km). All these numbers should add up to one other: Volvo says it’ll sell 20,000 DRIVe cars in Europe next year. The plant in Ghent, where the DRIVe models are being built, uses low-consumption paint shops and green electricity.

Volvo gets first order for new hybrid buses from Luxembourg

Filed under: Hybrid, Transportation Alternatives, Volvo, European Union

Luxembourg’s bus operator Sales-Lentz has announced the purchase of 6 brand new 7700 hybrid Volvo buses. This is the first firm purchase order of the recently-released model and means the first unit will hit the streets by the end of 2009, with the remaining five coming in 2010. The contract was signed in front of the Luxembourger Minister of Environmental Affairs, who considers the widespread use of hybrid buses a key step to curbing the small country’s carbon emissions as well as reducing noise pollution from buses leaving their stops.

Volvo News - Volvo shows off new hybrid bus series

Volvo shows off new hybrid bus series

Filed under: Hybrid, Volvo, European Union

Although European cities have a lot of the latest trends in urban mobility, there aren’t many hybrid buses on their streets. Volvo thinks that this could be a good moment to introduce hybrid buses, and has recently introduced the 7700 model. Claimed to reduce fuel consumption by 30 percent, Volvo says the bus will pays for itself in 5 to 7 years. It produces 30 percent less CO2 and 40 to 50 percent fewer particles and nitrogen oxides. Called I-SAM, the hybrid transmission is based on current I-Shift gearboxes mated to a lithium-ion battery that gets recharged by the engine or regenerative braking energy. Such is the power of the electric motor that the 7700 can use a 5-liter diesel engine instead of the standard 9-liters. The engine shuts down when the bus stops and the electric motor can move the bus until it reaches 15 to 20 km/h (10-13 mph), when the diesel engine kicks in. First deliveries are scheduled for 2010. Full press release after the jump.

Volvo News - Volvo trucks offers Fuelwatch to help reducing fuel costs up to 10 percent

Volvo trucks offers Fuelwatch to help reducing fuel costs up to 10 percent

Electronic fleet management is becoming a useful resource for operators keeping an eye on operational costs. Probably, the most important part of these systems is monitoring fuel consumption for all vehicles: it can point out which vehicles are burning more fuel than average and drivers who have a heavier right foot. Volvo’s management offering is called Fuelwatch, and it’s not only a device in the vehicles, but a full consulting system that the Swedish marque claims can cut fuel costs up to 10 percent. Ten percent might not sound like a lot of money, but imagine that for a fleet of trucks being driven around almost 24-hours a day.

Fuelwatch comprises several components: Advice on truck specifications, maintenance contracts, fuel saving accessories, driver training and use of a software called Dynafleet Online that monitors fuel consumptions. Saving 2 to 3 liters every 100 km (on a freight truck) means saving money and 2.6 kg of carbon dioxide emissions at the same time.
