Last year at the Paris Motor Show, Volvo introduced the world to its first three DRIVe models, which feature a slew of changes, including efficient diesel engines, manual gearboxes, stop/start, lowered ride height, aerodynamic tweaks and low rolling resistance tires. All of these modifications are meant to increase fuel efficiency and therefore decrease vehicle emissions. The models already available are based on the C30 SportsCoupe (53.4 mpg U.S.), the S40 saloon and the V50 Sportswagon (both at 52.3 mpg U.S.). Next week at the Geneva Motor Show, Volvo will debut four new vehicles to add to its growing DRIVe range.

The Volvo V70 and S80 DRIVe will feature the same 108-horsepower and 177lb ft 1.6-liter turbodiesel that the DRIVe versions of the C30, S40 and V50 are fitted with, allowing for a rating of 57.6 mpg in EU testing (48 mpg U.S.), with CO2 emissions of 129g/km. Volvo’s XC60 and XC70 also get the DRIVe treatment, though they feature a larger 2.4-liter 5-cylinder turbodiesel engine that drives the front wheels only and returns 47.1 mpg (39 mpg U.S.) and CO2 emissions of 159g/km. All four new DRIVe models will be available in the UK.this summer.

Volvo News - Volvo XC60 diesel beats gas over 662 miles in Northern California

Volvo XC60 diesel beats gas over 662 miles in Northern California

The guys at Popular Mechanics recently had an opportunity to test out Volvo’s new XC60 crossover in Northern California. When the XC60 goes on sale in the U.S. next month, it will only be offered with a 281 hp turbocharged 3.0L inline six cylinder. For the media drive, Volvo brought over some examples of the European-spec diesel model. The PM crew took one of the 182 hp 2.4L five cylinder diesels out on a 662-mile trip alongside a U.S. gas model. While the gas model proved a bit more responsive than the diesel, the oil burner’s torque proved itself useful climbing the hills when they got into San Francisco. To no one’s surprise, the diesel handily beat the gas version, so much so that even with the higher price of diesel fuel it still came out ahead. The diesel XC60’s 27.3 mpg was 39 percent better than the gas engine and with diesel at $3.00 and gas at $2.30, the operating cost of the diesel was 13.5 percent less. Volvo is expected to debut a new diesel engine at the Geneva next and rumor has it they may offer it in the U.S.

Volvo News - Volvo announces new 2.4L 5-cylinder diesel for S80

Volvo announces new 2.4L 5-cylinder diesel for S80

Over in Europe, Volvo’s top end model - the S80 - will be getting a new engine option this year in the form of a new 2.4L five cylinder diesel. This engine replaces an existing one with the same displacement and configuration. The new engine has an aluminum block and cylinder head and most of the latest in diesel technology. Fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chambers via a 26,000 psi common rail injection system with piezoelectric injectors. Intake air is pressurized by a pair of turbochargers of different sizes in a similar configuration to that used by BMW. The smaller turbo responds quickly at low engine speeds while the larger one takes over as revs build. The combination of a larger EGR cooler to reduce combustion temperatures, and thus NOx production, as well as a particulate filter allow the engine to meet EURO V standards. The D5, as it’s known, produces 205 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. A D5-equipped S80 with a manual transmission is rated at 38 mpg (US) combined, while an automatic transmission drops that to 35.1 mpg (US). That’s an eight percent improvement on the previous diesel while running cleaner.

Volvo News - Volvo S60 concept features GTDi engine technology and 47 mpg

Volvo S60 concept features GTDi engine technology and 47 mpg

Next month at the Detroit Auto Show, Volvo will shed its staid image with a new concept vehicle that points the way towards the next production S60 midsize sedan. Besides all of the stylish lines of the exterior, numerous safety features and concept-spec interior - complete with a real crystal center console - the coolest bit of tech lies under the shapely hood. Instead of dropping in the largest engine available, the Swedes have instead focused on a small displacement Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDi) powerplant. Perhaps the 180-horsepower isn’t quite enough to set the world on fire, but achieving that power output along with an estimated 47 miles per gallon and carbon dioxide emissions of 119g/km from an engine that displaces just 1.6-liters is really quite an accomplishment.

The best part is that this engine is expected to make it into production in 2009. Joining the new-tech powerplant are electric power steering, stop/start technology, a wind-deflecting “grille shutter,” flat aerodynamic underbody panels and a DRIVe-Mode that puts the car’s computers into a user-definable economy mode. Several of these fuel-saving bits are expected to show up on the production S60 due later this year.

Volvo News - Volvo micro-hybrid coming in 2011, full hybrid in 2012

Volvo micro-hybrid coming in 2011, full hybrid in 2012

To date, aside from some diesel and flex-fuel engines in Europe, Volvo hasn’t done much in the way of alternative drive vehicles. The Ford owned Swedish brand showed an extended range electric concept called the Recharge last year based on the C30. However, hybrids haven’t been part of Volvo’s program quite yet. That all appears set to change in the next few years as CAFE and European CO2 standards will be tightening. A micro hybrid, which is a fancy way of saying automatic start-stop system is set to debut in 2011. Actually, the system is also expected to incorporate a brake energy regeneration system like the one used by BMW. This system drives the alternator during deceleration to charge the 12V battery, reducing the parasitic load on the engine. A year later, a strong hybrid system paired with Volvo’s five cylinder diesel should debut. At some point, a production car based on the ReCharge is expected to debut although there is no indication of when that might happen.
