Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Stop & Start technology, also known as mild hybrization, is a relatively simple technology that can easily reduce fuel consumption in vehicles. Regular readers already know how it works. Basically, in most instances, the engine shuts down instead of idling, for instance at traffic lights, and stores enough energy to start right back up when the driver presses the gas pedal or shifts into the first gear. This technology can now be found in most car types, and is especially popular in Europe. It will surely become even more widespread once new CO2 legislation is enforced across Europe. We’ve got a list of 19 models (most of them available now, the rest coming soon) that offer Stop and Start on the continent.

Volkswagen News - Jetta TDI proving tough to find in California

Jetta TDI proving tough to find in California
Filed under: Diesel, Volkswagen, USA
In the minds of those in charge of voting for automotive awards, it seems that the new Volkswagen Jetta TDI can do no wrong. Perhaps the same can be said of new car purchasers, depending on where that buyer happens to live. Apparently, the German automaker can’t keep up with demand in a number of areas because of the way the vehicles are allocated to dealerships. At least one VW employee from California who had placed his order way back in 2008 is being told he won’t get his new car until late April or early May. In contrast, there is reportedly no wait at all in Washington, D.C. That unnamed employee says, “I could probably go there to buy one, but what am I going to do, drive it all the way back to California?” Think of the bright side… at least it would be a fuel efficient road trip.

Volkswagen and Toshiba to collaborate on electric drive systems
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Volkswagen
It’s been a busy day in Wolfsburg as VW followed up the release of a sketch of its upcoming mid-sized sedan with an announcement about new electric drive systems. VW and Toshiba have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on electric drive systems and power electronics. These electric drive systems will be used in battery-powered versions of the New Small Family (NSF) cars. The NSF lineup is made up of the production versions of the up! series of concepts first seen in 2007. VW is planning to build small cars based on this new platform under a number of its different brands around the world. In the press release, CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn, indicated that VW wants to be the first to mass produce affordable electric vehicles on a large scale. In order to get there, VW is working with a number of partners in addition to Toshiba on elements such as lithium ion batteries. VW has not given an indication of when these electric cars may debut, but if they intend to be first, they will have to move fast.

In the AutoblogGreen Garage: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI
Filed under: Diesel, Volkswagen, In The AutoblogGreen Garage, USA
The car as we know it is being redefined. Hybrids have reintroduced electrons to the driving experience, and the rumble, shake and shimmy of internal combustion engines is being muffled and, in some cases, even silenced by cars like the Toyota Prius, 2011 Chevy Volt and Tesla Roadster.
For us to continue harnessing the energy of combustion under our hoods, we need to go much farther on a gallon of fuel. Enter Volkswagen and the diesel-powered passenger cars it’s been selling in the U.S. since the late ’70s, the latest of which is the 2009 Jetta TDI. Follow the jump to find out how VW’s newest diesel fares against the electrified future of the automobile.

Volkswagen adds 7-speed DSG to European CC
Filed under: MPG, Volkswagen

Over in the UK, drivers buying a new Passat CC now have a new transmission option that gives them an extra 1.2 mpg. The 160 hp 1.8L TSI four cylinder can now be paired with VW’s 7-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox in place of the 6-speed manual. The DSG yields a combined 32.2 mpg (U.S.) compared to the 31.0 mpg (U.S.) with the manual. Similarly, the CO2 emissions have dropped from 178 g/km to 172 g/km. The 2.0L TDI diesel and gasoline 3.6L V6 are available with the 6-speed DSG, in addition to the manual and conventional automatic transmissions.
Here in the U.S., no DSG transmissions are available in the CC, and neither are the diesel or 1.8L engines. The 2.0L TSI is available with a 6-speed manual or automatic while the V6 can only be ordered with the automatic.
