Saab improves efficiency of 9-3 diesel, now up to 44.4 mpg (U.S.)

Saab has just tweaked the diesel versions of the 9-3 to reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Over in Europe, the Saab is available with a 1.9L turbodiesel four in two power flavors. The milder single turbo 150 hp variant is now rated at 44.4 mpg (U.S.) in the sedan or 42.8 mpg (U.S.) in the wagon. The CO2 emissions of the two body styles are now at 139 g/km and 144 g/km respectively. The average 7 percent gains in efficiency are due to revised gearing, taller (lower numerical) final drive ratio, revised engine calibrations and lower rolling resistance tires.

Saab News - Geneva preview: ethanol-powered Saab 9-3x on the way?

Geneva preview: ethanol-powered Saab 9-3x on the way?

Filed under: Ethanol, Saab, Geneva Motor Show

Saab releases biofuel-capable vehicles under the BioPower label. The latest model to get the ethanol treatment is rumored to be the 9-3X wagon, which Saab will unveil at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Even though development of the 9-X BioHybrid Comcept was put on hold last fall, flex-fuel vehicles are not dead yet and we found news that the 9-3X wagon will be available with either a turbo 1.9-liter diesel good for 180 hp or a turbo 2.0-liter E85-capable engine that can put out up to 210 hp. So says Motor Trend, anyway. As a GM brand, it makes sense for Saab to add the ethanol feature, but the press release (which describes the U.S. version and is pasted after the jump) mentions no such thing. We’ll have to wait until we’re in Geneva ourselves to know for sure.

Saab News - Saab 9-4X possibly another victim of GM cash crunch

Saab 9-4X possibly another victim of GM cash crunch

It looks like the cash flow crunch down at the Ren Cen has claimed another product victim. This time it’s the Saab 9-4X that looks like it will see a delay of up to a year before it’s launched. The new Saab crossover debuted as a concept at this year’s Detroit Auto Show and had been scheduled to launch in the fall of 2009. The Saab shares its platform with the Cadillac SRX that will debut at Detroit in January and go on into production in May. In concept form, the Saab used a direct injected and turbocharged 2.0L four cylinder that’s optimized for operation on E85. The production version will likely use something similar. While the concept didn’t use a hybrid drive system, and GM hasn’t given any indication in that direction, the production version could potentially use the two-mode hybrid transaxle that will debut shortly in the similarly-sized Saturn Vue. The premium-priced Saab could prove to be a more viable platform for selling the pricey two-mode system.

Spy Shots: Saab 9-4X, almost naked

October 1, 2008 by tsikot · Comments Off

The Saab 9-4X has been caught in these new spy shots without the Keith Haring tape job it was wearing the last time we saw it. Features like the converging window lines on the side, the rear lights, and the Saab grille, give away its lineage. From the side, especially from the A-pillar back, you could be forgiven for confusing the Saab with a lot of other CUVs, while lines that are quite distinctive on the smaller 9-3 and 9-5 look to have been stretched into rather bland expanses on the 9-4X. It’s still early, so we look forward to seeing the fully Saab-ified retail version. If Saab’s managing director is to be believed, what won’t be bland is one of the engine choices: a diesel with 250 hp and 406 lb-ft. That’s the kind of quirky we can get behind.

New Saab 9-5 sketch is less quirky, more badass

August 27, 2008 by tsikot · Comments Off

A Saab owner attending the 2008 Saab Owner’s Convention posted a recap of the events at Trollhattan Saab (which we thought was defunct, but if not, we’re glad it’s back). One of the most noteworthy events was something on which he barely commented: a sketch of the new 9-5. Saab has been threatening for a while to start incorporating Aero X cues into its vehicles, and this could be it.

The text around the car says it will have “aircraft heritage,” “fuselage bodysides,” a “wraparound winshield,” and a “grille inspired by a J21.” We find the J21 bit and the fuselage sides a stretch, but it’s still a good looking place to start. The sketch also hints that the tech in the new 9-5 is already being used in the Turbo X.

While other Saabs are supposed to be downsizing, the 9-5 will actually grow since it’s based on the Epsilon II platform along with the Opel Insignia and next-gen versions of the Saturn Aura and Chevy Malibu. The car’s engine will be shrinking, though, down to a 1.6-liter turbocharged unit. And could this be the Saab that Wagoner said will be built in North America?
