Geneva 2009: Infiniti Essence packs powerful, eco-friendly presence
Filed under: Hybrid, Infiniti, Nissan, Geneva Motor Show, Europe/EU, Japan
One of the hands-down sexiest cars at this years edition of the Geneva Motor Show was touting some green credentials beneath its curvaceous metal skin. The Infiniti Essence concept, meant to signify the, well, essence of all that is Infiniti, celebrates the luxury marque’s past and gives us hints of its future. At first glance, the styling appears to reflect European influences but we’re assured that it’s flow is inspired by Japanese calligraphy, its details from traditional Japanese items such as a hair pin used while a kimono is worn called the “kanzashi.”
As impressive as the Essence looks, what’s more important are the bits that power this hybrid. Yes, it’s a hybrid, and the innovative system it incorporates will likely be impleted in an Infiniti next year. It borrows the 3D electric motor concept from the wheels of the bubblicious Nissan Pivo and places its 369 lb-ft of torque between the transmission and the 434 horses supplied by an efficient gas-powered, twin-turbo, direct-injection 3.7-liter DOHC V6. The result of all that tech is the ability to electrically glide between the traffic lights and, in theory at least, burn a modest 29.4 mpg while having 592 powerful horses underfoot and available if the “need” arises. This engineering exercise should translate quite nicely when transferred to a more prudent vehicle. Check out the sweet visuals in the galleries below, hit the jump for full press release and essential stats.

Nissan News - Nissan gets a charge out of Ecotality in Arizona

Nissan gets a charge out of Ecotality in Arizona
Filed under: Etc., EV/Plug-in, Nissan, USA

Ecotality, an electric transportation and storage company, has been big-timing it lately with the likes of Nissan. Together with the Pima Association of Governments (PAG), they have formed an EV Micro-Climate Working Group with a goal of making Pima County, which encompasses Tucson, Arizona, the charging-infrastructured home of many electric vehicles. When Nissan launches its electric car in 2010, they will make sure to have some of their battery-operated lovelies available for public and private fleets in the region while Ecotality is to help with the planning and installation of the charging stations.
Although the project is being implemented to support the vehicles from Nissan, the public stations will meet charge system standards and be equipped with the J1772 connector that the Society of Engineers (SAE) has been working on. This should be the same plug other future electric cars will be equipped with. For older, pre-J1772 electric vehicles, we imagine adapters will be necessary. Full press release after the break.

Nissan plans EV network where Americans actually stop
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, USA
The Nissan EV team may have been spending some time in Sweden. The automaker is thinking out loud about an EV charging network that takes into consideration where people actually stop their cars. The planned network for America may therefore include places such as fast-food restaurants and other roadside stops or even car dealers, which could offer recharging as a courtesy. Electricity at these posts would be paid using a credit card. With these chargers, a car could get up to 80 percent battery charge (enough for about 80 miles) in about 30 minutes, is Nissan’s upcoming EVs, scheduled for 2012, perform as expected. The general layout of the planned network uses three types of charge points: home chargers in the garage; workplace charging, including parking lots and garages in downtown business areas; and a public infrastructure built around normal transportation areas like shopping malls, movie theaters, restaurants and airports.

Nissan News - Popular Mechanics compares fuel efficiency of Nissan Cube, Kia Soul and Scion xB

Popular Mechanics compares fuel efficiency of Nissan Cube, Kia Soul and Scion xB
Filed under: MPG, Kia, Nissan, Scion
The latest generation of the Scion xB - the car that kicked off the currently popular “box-it-came-in” styling trend - may be a perfectly fine vehicle with a few welcome improvements over the first edition, but we still miss the size, shape and fuel economy that the old model was able to deliver. Now that the 2009 Nissan Cube and 2010 Kia Soul are on their way to U.S. shores, drivers may finally get to choose what size they want their brick-like vehicles to come in.
Popular Mechanics managed to snag one of each of these triplets and they took the opportunity to drive them back-to-back through city slogs, canyon curves and the highway superslabs in between. Not surprisingly, all three vehicles seem to have offered something to recommend them over their competitors, but only one machine could come out on top, and it was the one that also managed to post the best fuel efficiency. We won’t steal their thunder, though, click here for the full story.
