More details on the new Infiniti hybrid coming in 2010
Filed under: Hybrid, Infiniti, Nissan, Green Daily
Hints of a luxury hybrid from Infiniti have been around for a while (see these 2007 posts: 1, 2) and peaked with the word back in January that the Nissan brand would release its own hybrid next year. The big shift is that the new Infiniti hybrid will not be reliant on Toyota-sourced parts (see: the Nissan Altima hybrid sedan). The mists cleared even further this week when new reports from the AP in Tokyo said that the new Infiniti hybrid model will go on sale in the U.S. and Japan next year. Nissan is working on a “different kind of battery” that is more powerful than what Honda and Toyota use and will likely go into a model that is bigger than a Prius.
Looks like the march towards that all-hybrid Infiniti line-up within a decade has begun.

Nissan News - British Business Secretary says Nissan should make batteries in UK

British Business Secretary says Nissan should make batteries in UK
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, UK
Lord Mandelson, the British Business Secretary visited a Nissan factory in Sunderland on Friday and got to see the Qazana crossover concept which will go into production there next year. Nissan is also expected to add production of electric vehicles at the plant and get some UK government money to make that happen. In addition to building EVs, Mandelson is urging Nissan to produce lithium ion batteries in the UK as well. Nissan has a joint venture with NEC called Automotive Energy Supply Corp which is developing and will manufacture lithium batteries at a factory in Japan. With Nissan and its French alliance partner Renault heavily involved in promoting EVs around the world, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see AESC make batteries in Europe at some point in the future.

Nissan to get UK government help for EV production
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Manufacturing/Plants, Nissan, UK
Most of the news regarding Nissan’s electric vehicle efforts of late have revolved around signing agreements with governments around the world to build out public charging infrastructure. Today, British Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is visiting Nissan’s Sunderland factory to announce government aid to the plant so that it can actually, you know, build electric vehicles. A memorandum of understanding between regional authority One North East and Nissan is being signed that will see 4,000 jobs preserved at the plant that has been down more often than it has been building cars recently. Nissan will get a grant of several million pounds towards re-tooling the factory for an electric vehicle to be introduced in 2011.

Nissan News - Nissan reconsidering Maxima diesel, U.S. production seems unlikely

Nissan reconsidering Maxima diesel, U.S. production seems unlikely
Filed under: Diesel, Nissan, USA
Surprise, surprise. As much as many Americans clamor for oil-burning engines for their future automobile purchasers, the fact of the matter remains that diesel engines do not translate into sales in the United States. The latest example of a mainstream diesel-powered machine being killed before it even gets off the ground may very well be the Nissan Maxima, which was scheduled to get a 3.0L diesel engine from corporate partner Renault before the end of the year.
Spokespeople for the Japanese automaker won’t go quite so far as to admit that it’s canceled, but it sounds like the writing is on the wall. Blame lowered gasoline prices and the general lack of new vehicle sales in the current economic climate. General Motors put its long-running 4.5L diesel V8 program on indefinite hold just a few weeks ago and rumors swirl that Honda may also officially drop its planned diesel engine for its Acura division. Sigh.

Nissan to demo EV Cube at Kanagawa Electric Vehicle (EV) Festa 2009
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan
Nissan will be showing off the second-generation version of its electric Cube this weekend at the Kanagawa EV Festa 2009. Nissan showed a concept called the Denki Cube at last year’s New York Auto Show and then showed the EV-02 (right) later in the year. The festival this weekend will be the first time that Nissan offers public rides in the prototype EV.
Nissan has committed to introducing an electric vehicle next year, but it has also said that the production version will not be based on the Cube. The current version of the prototype is propelled by an 80 kW electric motor and matching inverter. Nissan has a joint venture with NEC to produce lithium ion batteries. The flat prismatic cells are arranged into a pack that is mounted under the floor. If you happen to be in the vicinity of Yokohama Akarenga Park in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan it might be worth checking out the festival.
