Will MINI build a John Cooper Works diesel? “Good Idea”

Last summer we had a ball driving the MINI Cooper D in the ABG Garage. The torquey little 1.6-liter diesel proved to be a willing yet thrifty performer in the engine bay. While we still can’t get the MINI D in the U.S. market, BMW is reportedly considering building a high performance version of the diesel. On the gasoline-fueled side of the family, the 208 hp John Cooper Works model heads the lineup. A MINI senior engineer told AutoExpress in Geneva last week that a diesel-powered version of the JCW MINI would be a “good idea” but didn’t actually confirming anything.

Of course, we’ve heard similar claims from automaker officials many times over the years and then waited fruitlessly as nothing happened. If MINI does indeed produce a JCW diesel it would likely bump power from the current 110 hp to something in the region of 150-160 hp. Even at that level, real world mileage would likely remain somewhere in the mid-40 to 50 mpg (U.S.) range.

VIDEO: Jay Leno’s Garage welcomes the MINI E

Jay Leno is no stranger to electric vehicles, having owned or driven EVs as wide ranging as the 1909 Baker Electric to the Vectrix motorscooter, Zero X motorcycle and the Tesla Roadster. The latest EV that seems to have caught the denim-clad celebrity’s attention is the new MINI E. Jay found some time to meet with a couple of representatives from BMW and they discussed the merits of the zero-emission vehicle on video. Later, Jay took the car out for a quick little silent drive and he stretched the legs of the AC Propulsion drivetrain in both city and highway loops. Overall, Jay had plenty of good things to say about the experience, especially about its performance and the short recharge time due to the high-capacity charger that’s included as part of the $850 per-month lease package. Click past the break to watch the video. Thanks for the tip, M. Broz!

MINI News - UK next in line for MINI E testing?

UK next in line for MINI E testing?

It’s no surprise that there is a lot of demand for the all-electric version of the MINI. We heard that London might get some of the limited-supply MINI E’s last fall, but now the Telegraph is saying that a plug-in version of the MINI could be “on sale in Britain” by the end of 2009 (we assume the lease-only model for these cars will continue). If MINI’s test program does move to the UK, it would expand the test areas beyond Germany and the U.S. to the iconic car’s home turf. That’s fitting, no?

As for the already-announced test locations, the New York and LA participants should be getting their MINI Es in the next few weeks while Berlin and Munich residents need to wait until later this spring.

MINI News - German agency names BMW/MINI most fuel efficient premium brands

German agency names BMW/MINI most fuel efficient premium brands

The Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany has declared BMW and MINI as the most fuel efficient premium brands available in that market. The agency has calculated fleet average fuel economy for all new cars registered in Germany during 2008 and BMW/MINI came out on top with an average of 39.9 mpg (U.S.) and CO2 emissions of 158 g/km Those numbers are lower than the average for all German made vehicles, a number that stood at 165 g/km. Of course, that isn’t necessarily a direct comparison since the MINIs are made in the UK and help pull up thecompany average while the German aggregate number also includes cars from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and the VW Group.

The German fleet average for BMW is considerably higher than its U.S. CAFE average for 2008 of 27.4 mpg, in part because more than half of the BMWs in Europe are diesel powered and BMW only started selling diesels here a few months ago. BMW also doesn’t sell any of its four cylinder gasoline engines here or offer technologies like automatic start/stop yet. In the next few years the company will likely begin offering those technologies as well as new hybrids that will help its U.S. numbers.

MINI News - Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Filed under: Hybrid, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, MINI, Porsche, SMART, Toyota, Volkswagen, Fiat, Citroen

Stop & Start technology, also known as mild hybrization, is a relatively simple technology that can easily reduce fuel consumption in vehicles. Regular readers already know how it works. Basically, in most instances, the engine shuts down instead of idling, for instance at traffic lights, and stores enough energy to start right back up when the driver presses the gas pedal or shifts into the first gear. This technology can now be found in most car types, and is especially popular in Europe. It will surely become even more widespread once new CO2 legislation is enforced across Europe. We’ve got a list of 19 models (most of them available now, the rest coming soon) that offer Stop and Start on the continent.
