Mazda’s first Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid leases start in Japan

The first Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrids available to the public will soon be in the hands of the first lessees. Mazda announced today that it has started commercial leasing of the vehicles, which will be delivered later this year. Unlike the fuel cell-powered Honda FCX Clarity (leases for them started last July), the Premacy uses a hydrogen rotary engine in series configuration with lithium-ion batteries and an electric motor. When the 35 MPa high-pressure tank is filled with H2, the Premacy has a range of about 200 km (124 miles). For drivers worried about range, there’s safety in knowing that the rotary engine can burn both hydrogen and gasoline.

The Premacy Hydrogen RE has been road testing since last fall. Mazda has been working hydrogen rotary engines since 1991, when it developed the HR-X engine. In 2006, Mazda began leasing an earlier hydrogen rotary vehicle, the RX-8 Hydrogen RE. More details after the jump.

Mazda News - Mazda develops automatic bumper recycling process

Mazda develops automatic bumper recycling process

Ahhh, the corporate press release. In these missives, there is no detail too small to highlight something a company is doing. Those of us in the green auto media are pretty used to seeing announcements of dubious value come through our in boxes. I don’t remember seeing one purely devoted to bumper recycling before, though. Mazda has filled this gap by developing the “World-First Automated Recycling Technology for End-of-Life Vehicle Bumpers.”

Yes, feed any bumper (from a Mazda vehicle or other) into the crusher and, after a few intermediary steps like removing the metal parts, you’ll get raw plastic resin pellets that can be turned into new bumpers. This process is automatic and greatly simplifies the process, which means that more bumpers can be recycled quicker and more cheaply. Hey, maybe this isn’t such a small deal after all.

Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Stop & Start technology, also known as mild hybrization, is a relatively simple technology that can easily reduce fuel consumption in vehicles. Regular readers already know how it works. Basically, in most instances, the engine shuts down instead of idling, for instance at traffic lights, and stores enough energy to start right back up when the driver presses the gas pedal or shifts into the first gear. This technology can now be found in most car types, and is especially popular in Europe. It will surely become even more widespread once new CO2 legislation is enforced across Europe. We’ve got a list of 19 models (most of them available now, the rest coming soon) that offer Stop and Start on the continent.

Mazda News - Mazda to further refine Wankel rotary engine for more efficiency?

Mazda to further refine Wankel rotary engine for more efficiency?

Mazda’s Wankel rotary engine has always been unique in the automotive landscape as a mass-produced internal combustion engine that eschews such unsightly items as pistons, valves and camshafts. The Wankel packs lots of power into a very small package, but one thing it’s never been is fuel efficient, despite its relatively meager 1.3-liters of displacement. It seems the Japanese automaker is working hard to change that reputation with the next generation of the RX series.

Like the classic 13B engine that the current Renesis is still based on, the new 16X would use two rotors, though enlarged to 800cc each for a total of 1.6 liters. Despite the increase in displacement, Mazda hopes to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions by 20 percent.

Other efficiency improvements are planned as well, including a dual-clutch transmission and a significant weight savings over the current RX-8, which isn’t exactly a porker as it is. Supposedly, the new rotary would be available in both a two-door, two-seat RX-7 and a larger, four-seat RX-9 variants.
