Hyundai to offset CO

Hyundai took a big step upmarket in 2008 with the launch of its new Genesis luxury sedan. For now, the Genesis is only available with a choice of V6 or V8 engines but in keeping with Hyundai’s new Blue Drive strategy, the company has decided to do something about the Genesis emissions. Hyundai has decided to buy carbon offsets from CarbonFund.org that will cover the first year’s worth of emissions from all 2009 model Genesis sedans. Based on current sales projections, the company expects that to amount to about 93,170 metric tons of CO2. The money from the carbon offset payments will be used to permanently preserve and re-forest 3,000 acres of Brazilian rain-forest land. Hyundai is by no means the first manufacturer to do this and it likely won’t be the last. The Hyundai press release is after the jump.

LA 2008: Hyundai rolls out HED-5 i-Mode for first time on U.S. soil

We first saw Hyundai’s rolling CUV shapeship, the HED-5 i-Mode, back in Geneva, but today at the LA Auto Show is the first time the Korean automaker has shown the car in the States. New to the crossover is a 2.0L gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine that Hyundai plans to roll out in production machines shortly. The new Theta Turbo GDI engine puts out 286 horsepower, which is very impressive for such a small powerplant. Hyundai puts its direct injection and turbo technology to good effect and combines these new features with its Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) to allow for a 15-20 percent fuel economy increase compared with a standard 2.0L four-banger. Expect to see this new engine make its way into a production car sometime in 2010.

According to Hyundai, a new six-seat production CUV will hit the market in 2010 that’s inspired by the HED-5. Of course, don’t expect to see its far-out future-spec interior make it production, but the GDI engine and general look is a lock.

Hyundai News - Hyundai to offer 8 speed automatic in Genesis

Hyundai to offer 8 speed automatic in Genesis

As the need for fuel efficiency and the desire for power continue on unabated, automakers are looking for more ways to increase the performance of their powertrains. Many times, we focus in on the engine as it holds the most promise for huge efficiency gains. There’s more to eking out the best mileage possible, though, including making transmission adjustments. Mercedes-Benz has moved forward with seven gear ratios and Lexus has upped the ante with an eight-speed unit. BMW looks ready to follow as it introduces new eight-speeders of its own. Now, it sounds like Hyundai will be the third manufacturer to roll out transmissions with double the number of ratios that some transmissions still on the market employ. As more gearing options are included, the car’s assorted computers can choose the most appropriate option to get the desired performance while retaining as much efficiency as possible. We’d expect the new tranny to see its first application in the Genesis sedan in 2010.

Hyundai News - SEMA Preview: Hyundai experimenting with cylinder deactivation and supercharging

SEMA Preview: Hyundai experimenting with cylinder deactivation and supercharging

Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Hyundai, SEMA Show

We’ve been hearing that Hyundai has big plans for its new V8 engine, despite the fact that fuel efficiency has just recently become paramount in the U.S. market. As the Korean automaker’s first-ever V8, the company has plenty to learn. That’s fine, since it appears as if Hyundai is truly serious about getting the most from its new powerplant. Supercharging is being explored first, and a force-fed version of the car, which an Autoblog reader managed to snap a few pictures of while it was being gassed up, is set to debut at the upcoming SEMA Show. The power-adder allows the Tau V8 engine to offer 460-horsepower and propel the big sedan to sixty in just 4.9 seconds.

Extra power is nice and all, but we’re also very concerned with fuel economy, of course. Fortunately, so is Hyundai, so the RKSport Genesis that’s headed to Vegas has also been fitted with cylinder deactivation. That’s a feature that isn’t yet included on the stock car, but that may soon change. Word from Motive is that it’s likely headed to production versions of the Tau V8 engine in short order. Fuel mileage on the 460-horse supercharged mill actually improves to 18 city and 27 highway, matching the figures of the standard V6 engine. Now that’s progress.

Hyundai News - Hyundai going down the DI and weight reduction path for more MPG

Hyundai going down the DI and weight reduction path for more MPG

Hyundai is already near the top of the fuel economy ranks in the U.S. market, but that’s not enough to meet future requirements. Currently, Hyundai trails only Honda and Toyota in the CAFE race. Going forward, Hyundai plans to upgrade its powertrains and reduce mass to get its conventional vehicles to use less fuel. On the propulsion front, the Korean manufacturer plans to shift to direct injection with both normally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Sister brand Kia already showed the Koup concept last spring in New York with a gasoline turbocharged direct injection engine. That engine will likely appear in Hyundai and Kia production models in the coming years.

Lee Hyun-soon, Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group’s R&D boss told Automotive News that Hyundai will add six speed automatic transmissions to smaller and mid-sized cars and an eight speed automatic to the larger Genesis within two years. In addition to more efficient drivetrains, Hyundai will use aluminum, plastic and high strength steel to reduce the weight of its vehicles. While Hyundai is working on hybrids that are expected to start hitting the market sometime in 2009, Lee also said that the weight and cost of batteries means the company doesn’t plan any full EVs anytime soon.
