Dundee Michigan engine plant gets Clean Corporate Citizen award

Filed under: Manufacturing/Plants, Chrysler, Hyundai, Mitsubishi

The Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance factory in Dundee, Michigan has received a Clean Corporate Citizen award from the state’s Department of Environmental Quality. The plant, which is a joint venture between Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai, produces four cylinder engines used by all three automakers. The award recognizes the building techniques used in originally setting up the factory before it started operations in 2005 as well as the ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption, keep the surround area as much like it was as possible, and not sending any materials to land fills.

Hyundai News - Hyundai’s first hybrid will sport a “distinctive look”

Hyundai’s first hybrid will sport a “distinctive look”

One of the many reasons cited for the continued success of the Toyota Prius is its unique styling, which is both aerodynamically-sound and makes the car instantly recognizable as a hybrid. Other automakers have taken the route of adding special badges or modified grilles to their fuel-saving automobiles to help differentiate them from their standard siblings, but sales of these slightly modified hybrids have not taken off like the Prius. While the car’s unique shape isn’t the only reason the Prius is the best-selling hybrid, it certainly doesn’t seem to hurt.

Hyundai is expected to release its first hybrid model in late 2010. The car will be based on the Sonata midsize sedan, but may sport a distinct look to separate it from its non-hybridized sibling. Further, according to Woong-chul Yang, president of R&D for Hyundai-Kia Motors, the Korean automaker “may change the name if the exterior is quite different. People who drive a hybrid like to be differentiated.” You don’t say.

Hyundai News - Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Stop & Start technology, also known as mild hybrization, is a relatively simple technology that can easily reduce fuel consumption in vehicles. Regular readers already know how it works. Basically, in most instances, the engine shuts down instead of idling, for instance at traffic lights, and stores enough energy to start right back up when the driver presses the gas pedal or shifts into the first gear. This technology can now be found in most car types, and is especially popular in Europe. It will surely become even more widespread once new CO2 legislation is enforced across Europe. We’ve got a list of 19 models (most of them available now, the rest coming soon) that offer Stop and Start on the continent.

Hyundai News - Hyundai’s i30 blue will be first with ISG (stop start) technology

Hyundai’s i30 blue will be first with ISG (stop start) technology

Hyundai wants journalists who attend the Geneva Motor Show to focus on the new HED-6 concept SUV (above). That’s fine and all, but the company’s green blue news is that for the first time, a production Hyundai will get stop-start technology. The i30 blue is the lucky recipient of the micro-hybrid system, which Hyundai calls ISG (Idle Stop and Go). The Korean automaker says ISG “will contribute to a significant cut in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.” The i30 blue will also be the first to wear the “blue” badge; step one in Hyundai going global with its Blue Drive technology. The standard i30 can spew just 119g/km of CO2 from a 115PS 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine, while the petrol version of the 1.6-liter engine normally emits 152g/km. Using ISG on the gasoline engine drops emissions to 142g/km and reduces fuel consumption by seven percent. The i30 blue will go on sale in the UK this fall.

Hyundai News - New Hyundai America CEO discusses new hybrid system

New Hyundai America CEO discusses new hybrid system

Last week at the LA Auto Show, Hyundai showed off its first hybrid system for the US market that will debut in the next generation Sonata. Following the press conference, Green Fuels Forecast sat down with John Krafcik, then VP Product development (as of today, he’s Acting CEO of Hyundai America) to talk in more detail about the system. Turns out Hyundai has created a drivetrain with elements of both mild and strong hybrid systems available today. The motor in the 6-speed automatic transmissions provides electric boost and regenerative braking while an integrated starter generator provides the automatic start-stop functionality. The Sonata is also likely to be the first hybrid available here with a lithium polymer battery pack. In classic Hyundai fashion, Krafcik expects the Sonata hybrid to be the most affordable hybrid in the mid-sized segment with mileage that tops at least the current Camry hybrid, although probably not the new Fusion. The new Sonata debuts about a year from now with the hybrid coming in 2010.
