The everyone in Honda’s “Hybrid for Everyone” advertising campaign for the new Honda Insight apparently includes Xbox players. Honda will be the only sponsor of the upcoming “Play and Win” interactive quiz game that will kick off on Xbox Live Primetime May 15. The three-month free quiz show style game, part of Microsoft’s delayed interactive online network, will use the 1-vs-100 method. Video ads for the Insight will be shown to people in the game’s “waiting room” and during gameplay intermission. It’s not simply Insight ads that players will be thinking of when they sit down for a game: the overall winner of “Play and Win” will be given a 2010 Insight.

Other parts of the new Insight’s advertising campaign include something called “homepage takeovers,” online video, interactive tours of the car and “branded canvases” on ABC, CBS and NBC. What language is it that advertising agencies speak these days, anyway?

Honda News - Blue Energy is GS Yuasa and Honda’s lithium-ion batter JV company

Blue Energy is GS Yuasa and Honda’s lithium-ion batter JV company

Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Hybrid, Honda

Honda and the GS Yuasa Corporation have agreed on a joint venture contract for the “manufacturing, sales and R&D of Lithium-ion batteries for hybrid vehicles.” Called Blue Energy (apparently, the Japanese have taken to the European shift of the eco-defining color word?), the new company is the result of last December’s announcement and months of discussions on how to bring li-ion vehicle batteries to market. Hybrids will be the “central focus” of the JV, which makes sense given Honda’s distaste for plug-in vehicles. Even though the planned establishment date is April 1st, Blue Energy doesn’t smell foolish at all to me.

GS Yuasa, a battery supplier, announced in 2007 that it would work with Mitsubishi on lithium batteries.

Honda News - 2010 Prius, new Insight given the onceover by SoCal Honda dealers

2010 Prius, new Insight given the onceover by SoCal Honda dealers

Filed under: Hybrid, Honda, Toyota, Green Daily

Price war, price war, price war. By now, you’re probably all pretty familiar with the battle that is brewing between the numbers that will grace the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius. Aside from the price, though, these two vehicles are different in size and handling and features. Honda dealers, at least those in Southern California, are getting a hands-on look at what those differences are. Green Car Advisor’s Greg Johnson happened to see a parade of Insights and Priuses cruise down the street to where the dealers were learning about the new Insight, which goes on sale next week, and that tipped him off that the Prius is also part of their education. He asked around and found his hunch was right. Honda didn’t say exactly what the dealers are being told, but you can trust that they’ll be looking to move as many as possible before the Prius actually goes on sale later this spring.

Ever since Honda announced the revived Insight hybrid for 2010, rumors have swirled that the new model would undercut its chief rival, the Toyota Prius, in price by a few thousand dollars. Now, it’s official. Honda’s hot new hybrid will start at $19,800 (*plus $670 in destination charges) in base LX trim, meaning that for as little as $20,470, you can get your hands on an Insight with such standard features as power windows, automatic climate control, tilt and telescopic wheel and a sound system with CD player and auxiliary input jack for iPods.

One rung up the pricing ladder lands you an EX model for $21,300 (plus $670 in destination charges) and nets you stability control, alloy wheels, cruise control, paddle shifters for the CVT gearbox, and the ability to opt for GPS navigation. Of course, all models come with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid drivetrain with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and the ability to travel 40 miles on a single gallon of gas in the city or 43 on the highway. If you’re interested, the Insight goes on sale in two weeks, on March 24. Full press release after the break. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Honda News - Geneva 2009 = Honda Insight + ASIMO

Geneva 2009 = Honda Insight + ASIMO

How do you emphasize that your new hybrid is perfect for robot drivers? By introducing it in Europe with the help of ASIMO. That was Honda’s strategy in Geneva recently when the new Insight Hybrid made its European debut. ASIMO, known for conducting orchestras and falling down stairs, was on stage with the leader of Honda Insight’s development team, Yasunari Seki, and posed for some pictures. ASIMO was then put to work doing 54 15-minute public performances over 13 days. For these shows, ASIMO showed off its “ability to run, climb stairs, give and receive objects and interact with people.” As long as it stays on its feet, I’m sure it is mighty impressive.
