2010 Camaro takes advantage of six-speed for 29 mpg highway rating
Filed under: MPG, Chevrolet, Ford
With 2010 Chevy Camaros now rolling off the assembly line and into showrooms, General Motors has released all the final specs on its new sports coupe. While the Camaro has never been renowned for exceptional fuel efficiency, the new V6 version does demonstrate the advantages of having extra gears in the transmission. Even though the 3.6-liter direct-injected V6 produces 94 hp more than the 4.0L V6 in the 2010 Mustang, the Camaro manages to get 3 mpg more on its EPA highway rating. The 380-pound-heavier Camaro is rated at 17 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with a manual transmission. The automatic (also a six-speed) bumps the city number up to 18 mpg.
The Mustang, which retains five-speed transmissions for both manual and automatic versions, only gets 26 mpg on the highway. The combination of the more efficient DI engine and taller gearing allows the new Chevy to cruise at lower engine speeds. In city driving, the Mustang pretty much matches the Camaro with 18 mpg for the manual and 16 mpg with the auto-box. The Mustang is expected to get all new powertrains in 2010, including 6-speed transmissions and potentially an EcoBoost engine, which should significantly improve its efficiency.

Duke’s Garage turns ‘65 Mustang into Electric Pony
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Ford, USA
Many people love classic cars; but if you’re concerned about your environmental impact, how can anyone enjoy driving one? For some, the answer may be having the drivetrain converted to all-electric power and Duke’s Garage just outside Denver, Colorado has created an “Electric Pony” to show off their abilities to do just that. The classic car dealer and restoration specialist has taken a ‘65 Ford Mustang convertible in need of some extensive rebuilding and rehabilitated both its looks and its emissions output. The pony car is now powered using twinned electric motors supplied with current from a 144 volt lithium ion battery pack under the hood. The seats have been redone using recycled foam and are swathed in a classy hemp herringbone fabric with dark piping, as are the door panels. Finished in a dark olive, the “Electric Pony” is now green inside and out and ready to carry passengers about in style for 50 to 60 miles between charges. Check out their website for lots of pics of their handiwork. Duke’s will offer the service for $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the car and are eyeing a Volkswagen Beetle and Karman Ghia as their next projects.

Ford News - Spy Shots: New Ford-developed Scorpion heavy duty diesel V8

Spy Shots: New Ford-developed Scorpion heavy duty diesel V8
Late last year, Ford shelved plans to introduce a new 4.4-liter diesel V8 into its light duty F150 pickup trucks and full-size Expedition SUV. Ford has apparently continued to work on a larger diesel V8 that it has developed to replace the troublesome 6.4-liter Power-Stroke in its Super-Duty trucks. The Power-Stroke is supplied to Ford by Navistar and has caused the automaker no end of grief, in spite of its good performance.
The new 6.7-liter Scorpion has been spotted being tested in a prototype Super Duty pickup and reportedly incorporates some of the same ideas in the recently-shelved General Motors 4.5-liter Duramax diesel. Like the Duramax, the Scorpion uses a reverse flow layout for intake and exhaust. A pair of turbochargers lie in the valley of the V8 where they are fed by very short exhaust manifolds coming from the inboard side of the heads. This has multiple advantages. The short exhaust runs mean better response and reduced turbo lag as well as more energy available to drive the turbos since the exhaust doesn’t cool. The intakes are on the outboard side of the heads although its not clear if they feed through the top like the GM engine or from the outside.
According to PickupTrucks.com, the new engine should yield more power than than the Navistar engine as well as a 3 mpg improvement in efficiency. In the big trucks, where mileage ratings are often in the single digits, that’s a significant jump.

Ford News - Ford to unveil tri-fuel Mondeo at Leipzig Motor Show

Ford to unveil tri-fuel Mondeo at Leipzig Motor Show
Filed under: Ethanol, Flex-Fuel, Ford, Natural Gas, Europe/EU
Ford plans to use the Leipzig Motor Show to unveil a new version of the super popular Mondeo capable of running on gasoline, ethanol or liquified petroleum gas. As a flex-fuel car, a computer can detect what concentrations of gas or ethanol are pumped into the tank and can adjust the engine’s operation accordingly. The tri-fuel-capable car will use a 2.0L Duratec four cylinder engine that puts out 145 horsepower on either gasoline or ethanol or 141 horses on LPG.
There are dual tanks in this vehicle, so the total range when both tanks are filled is nearly 800 miles, depending on which bodystyle is chosen (the wagon has a smaller LPG tank). Sales are expected to commence in Europe in April with a starting price of €27,500. Not that it matters, since the car’s not coming to America and the conversion rates are never proper indicators, but that equals $35,150 in the U.S.
