No surprise: Nissan-built small Chrysler model in trouble

Color us unsurprised at the revelation that the long awaited tie up between Chrysler and Nissan has hit a rocky patch. Recall that the two automakers struck a deal last April that would have Dodge supply the next generation of the Nissan Titan fullsize pickup truck (built atop its Ram platform) in exchange for a duo of small cars to be built by Nissan and sold as Dodges. After the last few years of failed attempts to get some other automaker (first by way of Chinese automaker Chery, then Nissan) to build a small car for sale here in America, we’ve grown immune to the disappointment of not getting the Dodge Hornet concept produced in a timely fashion.

According to reports, sales of the Dodge Trazo, which is literally nothing more than a Nissan Versa wearing new badges, will go on as planned in South America. The other small car and the Dodge-built pickup have reportedly been put on hold as the companies work to fix their own financial problems. Our last hope may be that Chrysler is able to drum up enough money to make the planned strategic alliance with Fiat work out as hoped before its too late.

Dodge News - Washington 2009: Riding in the Chrysler EVs [w/VIDEO]

Washington 2009: Riding in the Chrysler EVs [w/VIDEO]

People are rightly skeptical about whether or not the Chrysler electric vehicles will ever make it to market. For now, all we can say for sure is that some of Chrysler’s EV prototypes can go for a spin around the Washington DC Convention Center. We were able to go for a ride in the Dodge EV and the Jeep ER-EV with Crysler’s Douglas Quigley, executive of product engineering for ENVI (the Chrysler electric vehicle “start up”) when we were in town last week, and you can see our video of the rides (no drives yet, sadly) after the jump.

Quigley said that it is not Chrysler’s intention to sell 100,000 of the Dodge EVs a year. You can roll your own joke about that, but his explanation was that the battery pack that is good for 150 miles will be expensive and therefore the target audience is someone who wants to cruise through the city or on the track for a few hours on the weekend. He’s got a lot more to say about these two vehicles in the video, including how they’re being used for testing in Arizona, what might make it into a possible production version and how fun it is to drive the Lotus Europa-based Dodge EV.

Dodge News - New Dodge EV to be called Circuit

New Dodge EV to be called Circuit

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chrysler, Dodge, Detroit Auto Show

The sleuths over at Jalopnik have managed to uncover the name of the new electric Dodge that is expected to debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week: the Dodge Circuit. The news comes by way of the US Patent and Trademark Office, and after a little bit of searching we managed to locate the official registration here. We’ve already seen spy shots of the little electric coupe, so we know that the automaker is feverishly getting it ready for its first public outing. We’re expecting to see plenty of Dodge-specific styling cues - especially the Ramified cross-hair grille as seen in the Demon concept (pictured above) - when it greets us in Detroit in lieu of the Lotus shell that sat atop the UQM drivetrain when the Dodge EV was first shown in concept form. If all goes according to plan, which is a big “if,” Chrysler hopes to have its electric sportscar in dealer showrooms sometime in 2010.

Dodge News - Chrysler still bringing EV concepts to Detroit

Chrysler still bringing EV concepts to Detroit

Chrysler made a really big deal about its three electric vehicle concepts that were first introduced to the public in September of last year (still not used to that, huh?) and was sure to mention at every opportunity that it planned on introducing at least one of these three vehicles, or at least a variation of the general theme, by 2010. There are quite a few skeptics - we ourselves are taking a “wait and see” attitude towards the situation - but the big loans that the automaker just got mean that it’ll at least be around long enough to show the concepts at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show later this month.

Don’t expect to see a lavish display like we saw last January from Chrysler, when it trotted out an entire herd of cattle through downtown Detroit for the launch of its 2009 Dodge Ram pickup. Although Chrysler’s not talking about it quite yet, the fact that we’ve seen spy shots of an electric Dodge Roadster already, our best guess is that the Lotus-based electric sportscar is the best bet to see production.
