First Chevy Volt Integration Vehicle to be completed June 1st
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chevrolet, GM, Green Daily
General Motors is reportedly closing in on an important milestone in its development of the Chevy Volt. To date, GM has built over 30 mules based on the Chevy Cruze, which will share the Volt’s Delta chassis underpinnings, but none of these cars look like Volts inside or out. Starting on the first day of June, that’s all set to change as the first so-called Integration Vehicles are scheduled for assembly then. This means that there will be real Volts running around GM’s testing grounds, albeit not in final form.
Andrew Farah, lead engineer for the Volt program, says, “my goal is by Fourth of July to be out driving several of them.” A total of 80 Integration Vehicles are slated for production before the car enters the next stage of development, which will see more and more final production methods perfected. Assuming all goes according to plan, the first salable Volts are scheduled for assembly in November of 2010.

Chevrolet News - 2010 Camaro takes advantage of six-speed for 29 mpg highway rating

2010 Camaro takes advantage of six-speed for 29 mpg highway rating
Filed under: MPG, Chevrolet, Ford
With 2010 Chevy Camaros now rolling off the assembly line and into showrooms, General Motors has released all the final specs on its new sports coupe. While the Camaro has never been renowned for exceptional fuel efficiency, the new V6 version does demonstrate the advantages of having extra gears in the transmission. Even though the 3.6-liter direct-injected V6 produces 94 hp more than the 4.0L V6 in the 2010 Mustang, the Camaro manages to get 3 mpg more on its EPA highway rating. The 380-pound-heavier Camaro is rated at 17 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with a manual transmission. The automatic (also a six-speed) bumps the city number up to 18 mpg.
The Mustang, which retains five-speed transmissions for both manual and automatic versions, only gets 26 mpg on the highway. The combination of the more efficient DI engine and taller gearing allows the new Chevy to cruise at lower engine speeds. In city driving, the Mustang pretty much matches the Camaro with 18 mpg for the manual and 16 mpg with the auto-box. The Mustang is expected to get all new powertrains in 2010, including 6-speed transmissions and potentially an EcoBoost engine, which should significantly improve its efficiency.

Geneva 2009: Chevy Spark interior designer speaks [w/video]
Filed under: Chevrolet, Geneva Motor Show
The Chevrolet Spark was one of the first cars our Geneva team saw when they arrived in town to cover the show. We got some nice shots of the interior of the vehicle (see 1, 2, 3), but we’ve now got some more info on the thoughts that went into stretching the two-door Beat concept into the Spark thanks to a video interview with David Lyon, Chevrolet’s executive director of interior design. Lyon says that the Spark’s five-door style looks like the three-door concept, but is much more functional, and that the Spark heralds what he hopes will be Chevy’s new domination of the mini-segment. You can watch the interview after the jump.

Chevrolet News - First Drive: 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid

First Drive: 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid
Filed under: Hybrid, Chevrolet, GM, GMC, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, First Drive
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Once again, this time-honored dictum is proving true as pickup trucks regain their rightful place at the top of the U.S. sales charts following a precipitous fall from grace last summer. As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, the cost of gasoline has dropped to a more manageable level, with an average gallon of regular-grade fuel going for half the price it was less than a year ago. So is it back to business as usual? Not quite. As we found out (again) in 2008, the volatile nature of gasoline stocks means that the market price for a barrel of crude can and will change on a whim. Does anyone really think fuel is going to stay cheaper than bottled water forever? Not likely.
However, America’s love affair with the pickup truck will continue to burn bright even though the status quo is changing. All vehicles, regardless of type, must travel more miles on each gallon of gasoline. Enter GM’s latest duo of fuel-saving pickups: the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Hybrids.
