Audi expands A4 lineup with less expensive, more efficient models
Audi has added two extra variants to the US market A4 lineup, both powered by the 2.0L TFSI four cylinder engine. The entry-level A4 2.0T FrontTrak is a front wheel drive sedan with Audi’s MultiTronic continuously variable transmission. The A4 Quattro sedan is now also available with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Previously, the only 2009 model was the front wheel drive Avant wagon. Both of the new models get EPA highway ratings of 30 mpg. The FrontTrack MultiTronic gets a city rating of 23 mpg while the manual transmission Quattro gets a 22 mpg urban rating. The front drive CVT model will start at $31,000 while the Quattro will start at $31,850.

Audi News - Audi likely to launch A3 TDI in US

Audi likely to launch A3 TDI in US
It makes pretty good sense for Audi to launch a diesel version of its A3 compact hatch here in the States. Since it uses the same platform as the Rabbit and Jetta, the 2.0L TDI is a sure-fire fit behind the A3’s huge front grille. In fact, we’ve driven the A3 with that exact engine a few times already, notably while we were participating in the Audi Mileage Marathon a few weeks ago. Volkswagen has already certified its 140 horsepower oil-burner for sale here in the United States, so that’s one more gigantic and expensive hurdle that wouldn’t need to be crossed. Popular Mechanics recently sat down with officials from the German automaker and Audi’s head of powertrain development Wolfganag Hatz confirmed that an unspecified Auti automobile would join the Q7 on our shores equipped with a diesel engine as early as next Spring. Sounds good to us.

Audi News - Audi A1, A2 and E1 to arrive before 2014

Audi A1, A2 and E1 to arrive before 2014
We’ve been hearing ruminations of new small cars from Audi for the last few years, and they’ve only heated up since the introduction of the A1 Sportback concept at the Paris Motor Show a few months back. Current rumors indicate that the small hatches are expected to hit the market sometime before 2014. Of course, by that time, the A1’s primary competitor, the MINI, will have already had its electric power for a few years. The A1 will share an engine range with VW’s Up! and will likely spawn an electric variant that could be named the E1, breaking from the automaker’s standard naming practice.
A slightly larger and more upscale model could go by the A2 moniker and could also get a hybrid powertrain along with Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive technology. A bit further down the line, an all-electric powertrain may make its way up to the A2, which we would presume would equal an E2, though one can never be sure of these things so far in advance.

Audi News - The Last Days of the Audi Mileage Marathon: Vegas to LA

The Last Days of the Audi Mileage Marathon: Vegas to LA
Filed under: Diesel, Etc., Audi

Along with Autoblog lensman Drew Phillips, we did the last leg of the Audi Mileage Marathon in Car #5: an Audi Q7 fitted with a 3.0-liter TDI. Our route lasted four days and took us from Las Vegas to Mammoth Lakes, CA, to Monterey for the final ALMS race at Laguna Seca, and then to Los Angeles. Unlike almost every other group there, we weren’t trying to set any mileage records, we wanted to see how the Q would do when driven like we normally drive. After four days of drinking the oil-burning Kool-Aid and hauling ourselves through the Western hinterlands, our verdict: the 3.0 TDI is a fabulous engine, and you’d be crazy not to get it in the Q7 if you’re in the market. Follow the jump for the full story, and check out the gallery of high-res images below.

Audi News - Audi Mileage Marathon: Diesels are definitely efficient, will it matter?

Audi Mileage Marathon: Diesels are definitely efficient, will it matter?

As we roll into Dallas to conclude day 5 of the “Great American Road Trip,” it is clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that modern diesel engines are very efficient while still providing excellent performance. However, the dominant back drop hanging over the plates of ribs at BB King’s Blues Club Thursday night was the continuing collapse of the financial markets. As those of us sitting around the table pondered the survival of the industry that we all write about, the cars and SUVs we were driving faded to the background. Unlike some of the more exotic alternatives out there, the TDI technology used by Audi is available now with more coming to the U.S. market in the coming months.
The question is will anyone be able to buy it or any of the future powertrains? Very few people buy new cars with cash. The industry relies on being able extend credit to drivers. The key element of what is happening this week is that financial institutions have become unwilling to loan money to anyone. After loaning way too much over the last decade to people who couldn’t afford to pay it back, there is now nothing going out. That creates a great deal of uncertainty in product planning. Audi made the decision to launch their new diesels in the Q7 long before this ever started and it’s unclear what their future path will be. The A4, Q5 and A3 have all been talked about as potential future U.S. diesel products, but without knowing where auto sales in general are going it’s hard to choose a direction. With Toyota already having canceled its planned diesel for the Tundra and rumors of other product cancellations on the horizon, the only thing we know for sure is that we know nothing.
