The more things change, the more they stay the same. Once again, this time-honored dictum is proving true as pickup trucks regain their rightful place at the top of the U.S. sales charts following a precipitous fall from grace last summer. As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, the cost of gasoline has dropped to a more manageable level, with an average gallon of regular-grade fuel going for half the price it was less than a year ago. So is it back to business as usual? Not quite. As we found out (again) in 2008, the volatile nature of gasoline stocks means that the market price for a barrel of crude can and will change on a whim. Does anyone really think fuel is going to stay cheaper than bottled water forever? Not likely.

However, America’s love affair with the pickup truck will continue to burn bright even though the status quo is changing. All vehicles, regardless of type, must travel more miles on each gallon of gasoline. Enter GM’s latest duo of fuel-saving pickups: the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Hybrids.

Hyundai News - Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Which cars in Europe have Stop & Start technology? These do

Filed under: Hybrid, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, MINI, Porsche, SMART, Toyota, Volkswagen, Fiat, Citroen

Stop & Start technology, also known as mild hybrization, is a relatively simple technology that can easily reduce fuel consumption in vehicles. Regular readers already know how it works. Basically, in most instances, the engine shuts down instead of idling, for instance at traffic lights, and stores enough energy to start right back up when the driver presses the gas pedal or shifts into the first gear. This technology can now be found in most car types, and is especially popular in Europe. It will surely become even more widespread once new CO2 legislation is enforced across Europe. We’ve got a list of 19 models (most of them available now, the rest coming soon) that offer Stop and Start on the continent.

Kia News - Popular Mechanics compares fuel efficiency of Nissan Cube, Kia Soul and Scion xB

Popular Mechanics compares fuel efficiency of Nissan Cube, Kia Soul and Scion xB

The latest generation of the Scion xB - the car that kicked off the currently popular “box-it-came-in” styling trend - may be a perfectly fine vehicle with a few welcome improvements over the first edition, but we still miss the size, shape and fuel economy that the old model was able to deliver. Now that the 2009 Nissan Cube and 2010 Kia Soul are on their way to U.S. shores, drivers may finally get to choose what size they want their brick-like vehicles to come in.

Popular Mechanics managed to snag one of each of these triplets and they took the opportunity to drive them back-to-back through city slogs, canyon curves and the highway superslabs in between. Not surprisingly, all three vehicles seem to have offered something to recommend them over their competitors, but only one machine could come out on top, and it was the one that also managed to post the best fuel efficiency. We won’t steal their thunder, though, click here for the full story.
