Rendered Rip Off? Racy Genesis coupe illustration called into question

Yesterday’s announcement that Hyundai would be bringing three Genesis coupe concepts to SEMA has been met with some skepticism surrounding the legitimacy of the first rendering Rhys Millen Racing released.

John Sibal posted the RMR Genesis coupe illustration on his site today, along with his own LF-A rendering that we featured back in April. There’s a striking similarity between the LF-A’s front bumper design - specifically the molded winglet, side air intake, air dam and tow-hook placement. We’ve tried contacting Hyundai about the matter, hoping they could provide contact information for the artist who drew up the coupe, but got stuck in voicemail Hell instead. While this could just be a case of indirect inspiration, we somehow doubt it and are looking forward to getting the full story soon. Thanks to all who tipped in.

Craigslist Find of the Day: “Boss” Audi A4 Avant

If you act now, you can purchase the 2001 Audi A4 Avant in the picture above. If you want the whole car, as is, it will cost you $2,500. If — for reasons we can’t fathom — you want the car without the front bumper, it will cost you $2,350. If you want that same car, but don’t want the wheels, well, that paperweight will cost you $2,000. Strike all three important components and the aftermarket stereo, and this fine piece of German engineering is yours for the bargain basement price of $1,300.

The caption in the photo above is due to the fact that its owner, Ben, believes the car is “boss” and intimidates other basic transportation, like a Ford F-350. But don’t make a play for it until you’ve seen the rear. Specifically, the plank of old growth timber that’s posing as a bumper. According to that bumper, Ben’s treasure is in heaven. Yours, according to Ben, is in Cincinnati. If you put $5 bucks in the tank, he’ll let you test drive it, and if you swing by you can shake his hand. Now that’s boss. Thanks for the tip, Carlos!

Chrysler’s next sedan could be a Nissan Altima (or a Fiat)

Motor Trend is reporting that Chrysler is considering a few different options now for its 2012 midsize offerings. The first option is to stick with Project D, which is gobbling up engineering and design resources. Option two is to use either Fiat’s premium midsize platform or the Nissan Altima platform, and design and engineer the rest of the vehicle from scratch. Chrysler can also decide to badge-engineer one of the vehicles, which would be a far cry from the original plan to have many vehicles spawned off one platform.

Since Fiat currently doesn’t have any infrastructure in the U.S. and Nissan already has ties with Chrysler (Dodge will be building the next Nissan Titan and Nissan will be building the Hornet out of Versa parts), the Japanese automaker makes more sense.

In the Autoblog Garage: 2009 Volkswagen SportWagen SE

A while back, my wife and I decided we would become parents. As soon as I saw the little wand TURN blue, I knew we’d need a bigger car. That was almost three years ago. We still need a bigger car. The problem with knowing a little bit about cars is the dizzying plethora of choices and the rumored promises of what’s on the horizon. We didn’t want the soccer-mom stigma of a minivan, or an SUV that drove like a truck and got 12 mpg. We wanted a car with room for two parents and one, possibly two, baby seats, and all the gear that comes with a growing family. I insisted the car have handling as near a sports car as possible, burn as little gas as possible and cost less than $25k. Oh, and is it too much to ask for style?

My mom said, “You want it all, don’t you? Just buy something.” Which, of course, only incited me to a new level of stubbornness and a vow to find the perfect car. After more than TWO years shopping, our family car Holy Grail just might be German.

BMW updates M models for 2009

BMW’s lineup of M-fortified vehicles now numbers nine, which is the largest it’s ever been in the sub-brand’s 30-year history. Munich has tweaked the lineup for 2009, and while nothing groundbreaking has been added, the additions and changes are worth noting. For instance, the BMW M3 Sedan gets a new rear end that sports updated taillights with two LED light clusters, and the entire M3 line gets some minor interior tweaks, new colors and crash-active headrests. The M5 and M6 soldier on with larger sideview mirrors, though BMW mentions that regenerative braking and an uncoupling air conditioner compressor - both fuel saving technologies - are right around the corner.

Of course, all M models are now offered with the latest generation of the automaker’s much maligned iDrive control system. We haven’t had the opportunity to sample the new version yet, so we’ll refrain from making fun of its user interface for now. A new, impressively large 8.8-inch nav screen is, however, available with the optional Professional navigation system package and each system has moved from being DVD-based to storing all the info on an in-dash 80GB hard drive. This fall, BMW will also be offering ConnectedDrive, the first application of unrestricted internet access in a car, across the M lineup and iPhone integration has now been worked out, as well.

Perhaps the most significant addition is the arrival of a Competition Package for the M6 Coupe. The Competition Package includes a newly tuned performance suspension that lowers the car 12 mm up front and 10 mm in the rear, an adaptable suspension control system and double-spoke forged alloy wheels. BMW claims this will be the most athletic M6 you can buy and that there will be visual distinctions to set it apart from a standard M6. Unfortunately, BMW refrained from showing us what those visual distinctions will be. You can view what they did show us, however, in the gallery below.
