RR of the Day: 1990 BMW 325is (BMW Cars News)
November 30, 2006 by tsikot · Leave a Comment

Purchasing a car strictly for transportation is a tough pill for most gearheads to swallow. Inevitably, those of us who are bitten by the mod-bug slowly determine that what was formerly a day-to-day beater, could become something a little more special. Such is the case with this ‘90 BMW 325is, owned by David Moffitt.
The Bimmer began its role in David’s life as an alternative to his overpowered 350Z (if there could be such a thing). As time wore on, and a visit to the track revealed, Mr. Moffitt recognized that the suspension was due for an upgrade. And so it began. Over the course of its ownership, the 325 received a set of Bilstein shocks and H&R springs, new front control arm bushings and a few other choice pieces in need of replacement. The brakes pads were replaced with Axis Ultimate pieces and the headlamps received new bulbs to illuminate the road on those late night drives.
In the words of Mr. Moffitt, 16 years of use and abuse made the E30 an “ugly duckling,” so the body was bathed in Sepang Bronze Metallic, shared by the Z4 M Coupe and E90 M5. Before the paint was applied, M-technic2 front and rear bumpers were added, along with a subtle wing and side skirts pulled from the E36 M3.
David’s whole account of the 325is’ transformation is posted after the jump, along with a couple more photos of one of our favorite 3s.
Next week’s theme for RR of the Day is forced-induction! We want to see all the supercharged and turbocharged goodness you keep pent-up in your garage, poised to unleash copious quantities of boost on unsuspecting posers. Directions on how to submit your ride are posted after the jump.

Cadillac News - Spy Shots: 2009 Cadillac CTS-V
November 30, 2006 by tsikot · Leave a Comment
, Sedans/Saloons, Sports/GTs, Cadillac
The new CTS looks killer if recent spy shots are anything to go by. These shots show what appears to be the next generation CTS-V undergoing testing, as evident by the wide tires and performance wheels, larger exhaust tips, and most conspicuously, the bubble protruding from the mule’s hood that we guess is making room for a supercharger. While no one knows for sure what engine will power the next CTS-V, some say it will be a non-supercharged 4.6-liter V8 while others swear it will have a blower. Looks like the latter camp may be right, and if so, The Car Connection says the CTS-V may have between 550-600 horsepower, which is just pure insanity for an “entry-level” luxury sedan. Apparently Cadillac is serious about hammering the BMW M3 and M5 (the 3-Series is really the direct competitor to the CTS, but 550-600 hp will allow the CTS-V to run with the V10-powered M5) with some serious Detroit iron. Only 7,500 examples of the CTS-V are pegged for production, and judging from these shots we’re sure Cadillac won’t have any trouble unloading them.

Saab News - Facelift for Saab 9-3 next summer
November 30, 2006 by tsikot · Leave a Comment
, Coupes, Sedans/Saloons, Hatchbacks, GM, Saab
The Saab 9-3 is not scheduled for replacement until 2009, but rumors are circulating the web that a facelift is in the cards for next summer. The revised styling is expected to draw on the design of the Aero X concept car shown in Geneva.
While the all-new 2009 9-3 will be based on the upcoming Epsilon 2 platform, the facelifted 2008 version will continue on the current Epsilon base, but possibly offer a new all-wheel-drive option.
Given that none of the current Epsilon-based GM products currently offer all-wheel-drive, and that the new Epsilon 2 platform is just a few years away, it seems an odd move for Saab to put all-wheel-drive in a car right before it’s scheduled for replacement. But then again, Saab is a bit of an odd company, so we’ll see what they have in store.

Volkswagen News - Porsche proposal busts Bugatti
November 30, 2006 by tsikot · Leave a Comment
, Sports/GTs, Supercars, Bugatti, Porsche, Volkswagen, Earnings/Financials
That Porsche owns a significant stake in the Volkswagen group (and all its subsidiaries) is no secret. In fact, Porsche is even in the process of increasing its stake. Oddly, though, little seemed to be done to minimize the competition presented to Porsche products by those of VW divisions: Lamborghini Gallardo vs. Porsche 911 Turbo, Audi TT vs. Porsche Boxster and Cayman, Audi Q7 vs. Porsche Cayenne, etc. But now Porsche is reportedly taking aim at an easy target: Bugatti.
Truth be told, it’s really Bugatti’s lack of profitability that Porsche is targeting. Porsche remains one of the only sportscar manufacturers that generates profit (copious amounts of it, actually), while Bugatti loses VW money continuously. The development costs of the super-expensive Veyron were to be offset by the application of technology towards future Bugatti vehicles (like a new saloon or four-door coupe), but if Porsche gets its way, a new Bugatti will never see the light of day, with Stuttgart evidently preferring to cut their loses (and a competing supercar maker).
Volkswagen would be unlikely to find a buyer for Bugatti even if Porsche applied enough pressure for them to sell. Stuttgart’s proposal, then, would be to turn the exclusive marque even more exclusive, as a coachbuilder, creating unique one-off vehicles (like Jim Glickenhaus’ Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina) for over $4 million a piece. And here we thought the existing Veyron was expensive….

Hyundai News - Hyundai Veracruz official video surfaces
November 30, 2006 by tsikot · Leave a Comment
, Videos, Crossovers/CUVs, Hyundai
The fellas over at CarScoop managed to get their hands on an official video of the Veracruz, Hyundai’s new large CUV that has technically yet to debut. Yesterday a brochure leaked onto the web pretty much erased Hyundai’s element of surprise, and now the video here shows us what the Veracruz looks like in motion as well as the interior.
It appears to be a commercial for the Korean version of the Veracruz, which we learn will come with a 3.0-liter V6 producing 240 horsepower. We’re still hopeful the North American version will come with a version of the Azera’s much more powerful 3.8-liter V6. Rumor has it that the Veracruz will be officially unveiled tomorrow, so perhaps after that we can stop pretending to be so excited about another CUV. Yay!
Hyundai has also erected a digital domain for the new Veracruz, a.k.a. a minisite, which can be found here, although it’s more just fun with flash than substance at the moment.
